Wall Street protests inspire ‘Occupy Madison’ (All 200 of Them...)

As more than 200 people gathered Friday evening at Reynolds Park for the first in a series of “general assemblies” — inspired by a similar movement in New York that has generated protests on Wall Street — the primary plan was to come up with one.

Calling itself “Occupy Madison,” the loosely organized group vowed to maintain a presence at the park until 7 p.m. Sunday, allowing for committees to form and to decide whether to join protests across the U.S. planned for Oct. 15.

Participants got city permission to camp in the park on the Near East Side, but tents, food vending and fires are prohibited.

“It’s got a bit of spontaneity about it,” said Bill Fetty, one of five people who began discussions for “Occupy Madison” about a week ago. Word spread by mouth and social media, he said, but postings to a community Facebook page were essentially discontinued after someone posted misleading information that the assemblies had been canceled. Updates are available through a Twitter feed at occupymadison99, he said.

Carrying American flags and signs with slogans such as “I am not a corporation” and “Give it back,” participants focused on the logistics of occupying the park through the weekend — containing trash, debating whether to rent portable toilets, and taking donations for pizza — and voted to convene meetings at noon and 5 p.m. today to discuss next steps. Many in the initial crowd left at 7 p.m., when the public address system was shut down per city ordinance.

Bob Reuschlin of Madison credited protests at the state Capitol earlier this year with helping to spark the recent protests on Wall Street.

David Williams of Madison, a retired librarian, said, “I think this is the beginning of a whole movement to tax the big corporations and create an economy where people can make something useful.”

Tax the corporations more and all you'll be 'making' is your way to the unemployment office, LOL!

You know Madistan is usually all over this stuff like stink on a monkey. Wonder what gives that they can't generate much enthusiasm for this ill-fated venture?

Occupy Madison?

They still haven’t paid the fumigation and cleanup bill for the last time they did that.

Occupy Madison Says:

For some reason there are some people out there who would rather have us antagonize one another by posting cancellations and such when we’d actually love to bring people together. That’s what this is about. So, hope you can make it, no matter which side of the “aisle” you’re on.

Is there something special about having reached over 4,000 likes?? ;) Just want to relay our apologies for any confusion that ensues out of the mess that someone is trying to create to deter people from, gasp, visiting a public park!

We look forward to seeing all of you tomorrow! (Or whenever you can attend!)

A girl at the Occupy Nashville was bragging about the crowd. “There must be at least 200 or more here!” , of course they had to be home before dark. Phhttt!

Oh, I don't think you want my side of the aisle to show up. I would come bearing job apps from every Taco Bell or sub shop with a "we're hiring" sign in front. I would hand them out to you all, along with a bar of soap.

It’s already beginning to fizzle, as I knew it soon would. The original shock and awe is over. People have moved on to the next thing.

This is the same group who currently occupy our Whitehouse and who first defecated on our Constitution. Now they are defecating on our cities’ streets

The Community Agitator has done just that. Unfortunately it’s not the right crowd he wanted agitated. He needs to pray more.

All the normal people in WI have already had ‘protests’ up to here. This kind of BS will go a long way towards making any recall efforts against Gov Walker a total failure.

So they will “occupy” the park until 7:00PM on Sunday night...just enough time to get home to watch the Packer game on Sunday night...at least they have nice weather for their little get together...but camping without a fire to roast hot dogs and making smores is not as much fun. I will predict that if the free pizzas don't show up then they will leave tonight to get some food from their parents...

If they want to impress somebody they could try this again in January...but I doubt they could get a whole 200 people to show up.

Those little hotdog and taco carts that hang around the edges of parks are going to profit big time!

taking donations for pizza

Let's see, the pizza places in Madison are: Pizza Hut, Pizza Pit, Rocky Rococos, Little Ceasars, Pizzaria Uno, Gumby's, and Glass Nickel. First 5 are definitely corporately owned, and I think the last two are as well. Protest evil pizza making corporations!

Glass Nickel was the last to hold out against ‘corporate greed,’ LOL!

This ‘movement’ has gotten to be SUCH a joke.
