Romney [Obama-lite] up in Florida 30% Romney, 24% Perry, 7% Cain-Sept. 22-25, 2011
Public Policy Polling ^ | 28th September 2011 | PPP Polling

Posted on 09/28/2011 2:07:36 PM PDT by shield

Rick Perry's led the Republican field in every Southern state that we've polled since he entered the Presidential race...until now. Mitt Romney continues to lead the way in Florida with 30% to 24% for Perry, 10% for Gingrich, 8% for Ron Paul, 7% for Herman Cain, 6% for Michele Bachmann, 3% for Jon Huntsman, 2% for Rick Santorum, and 1% for Gary Johnson.

Perry had a poor debate performance in Florida Thursday night and our results suggest that the negative coverage he received from that did hurt him some in the state. We started this poll on Thursday night before the debate and in those interviews the race was neck and neck with Romney at 33% and Perry at 31%. But in interviews done Friday-Sunday Romney's lead expanded to double digits at 29-19. More telling might be what happened to Perry's favorability numbers after the debate- on Thursday night he was at 63/23 with Florida Republicans. Friday-Sunday he was at 48/36. Perry's poor performance may or may not prove to be a game changer nationally but it definitely appears to have hurt his image in the key state where it occurred.

Count me in that second group. I think a strong conservative congress (not Republican—but conservative) can help keep even a moderate Republican in check.

You better go back and see that video of what Sarah said. She was very positive for Cain....that ‘flavor of the week’ bit was a slam on the media.

RE:” I will not praise one loser just to avoid “helping” another. To hell with both of them. I think Perry is the better one but not by that much. They have much more in common with each other than either has with ‘tea party’ conservatism.

Even if I didnt know Romney, Republicans nominating a ex-MA governor would still strike me as a disaster.

I have an idea for Perry that would ease my fears that he would try a GWB/2007/Amnesty betrayal if POTUS. He should come out and give a clear and unambiguous “Read my lips” public promise to not sign any bill that gives any form of a national Dream Act or Path to Legalization, and he will FULLY enforce current laws and drop the AZ Lawsuit (for sjb LOL.).

Before you would conclude he would just lie consider that no other candidate wants to make that public promise, they are all terrified of Hispanics in a general race. He would be going out on a political limb with Hispanics.

If he did that it would ease my fears.

I definitely dont want Romney but I am not eating crap in 2012 as we were told to do with McCain2008.

Go Cain. I don’t believe this poll. He just won Florida. There would be zero reason to change their minds so soon. I think Perry has the six percent and Cain the 24 percent.....they probably switched the numbers around.

People here cheering for Perry to stumble

lol. Cheering was not needed. He made his bed himself and it was easy. There was zero work for us. We just watched the disaster that is Perry. Thank God he self inflicted himself and Cain is gaining. Cain just won Florida. You are delusional.

That is one of the biggest insults I have ever heard about Reagan. The poor guy is being compared to a RINO.....sad.

They’re too busy hating on Perry (who they agree with 80% of the time)...which only helps Romney (who agrees with them only when it helps him).

But that’s ‘REAL’ conservatives for you. They’re worse than than the opposition...because at least they don’t feign to care about the conservative cause. If they wanted to do any good, they’d focus on two people: Obama and the top-rhino (Romney). I’ll vote Romney over Obama, but the whole idea people attack Perry FAR more than Romney is suicidal for the cause of conservatism.

I mean we might as well just give up on conservatism if we favor Romney in that way.

Not so fast...

PPP surveyed 472 usual Florida Republican primary voters from September 22nd to 25th.
The margin of error for the survey is +/-4.5%. This poll was not paid for or authorized by
any campaign or political organization. PPP surveys are conducted through automated
telephone interviews. PPP is a Democratic polling company, but polling expert Nate
Silver of the New York Times found that its surveys in 2010 actually exhibited a slight
bias toward Republican candidates.

472 is not a large sample and it is a Democrat polling group, and they WANT Romney.

They should all be deported, and don't tell me it can't be done, it does take the right kind of leader to do it.

Yeah "they should all be deported." That would go over great. Make it a campaign slogan while you're at it - this way you'll be sure to flush any given candidate down the toilet.

You - and those like you - must absolutely HATE Reagan. He didn't simply give kids who were brought across the border a tuition break. He gave millions of illegal immigrants A-M-N-E-S-T-Y. Reagan was also behind federal firearms bans and many other liberal-ish things that Perry wouldn't be caught dead backing.

But hey, let's destroy Perry anyway, even if it gets us Romney.

This type of vapid stupidity makes me f____g ILL.

Why do you keep insisting on the false choice of Perry vs. Romney? We don’t have to have either.

There are conservatives running, we don’t need RINOS.

BTW, this poll was conducted by a DEMOCRAT polling group of just over 400 people.

Yes, but it was only about 3 million. Do you want to import 10s of millions of leftist voters (with many more 10s of millions to follow via family-based immigration), starting now?

And I don't hate Reagan, but he made a mistake that we can't allow with today's numbers.

Perry allowed the children who were brought here illegally state tuition rates. That does NOT translate into him being for importing "10s of millions of leftist voters."

I'm not sure what your chart has to do with the discussion at hand, but Perry isn't nearly as bad on immigration as he's being made out to be.

Advocated for and eventually signed a stringent voter ID law

Pushed for anti-sanctuary city law

Opposes the federal dream act

August, 2010: Perry asks Obama for 1,000 additional National Guard troops on border

Perry sends Whitehouse $350 million bill for cost of illegal immigration

Advocates the use of unmanned drones to patrol border

"I can promise you that when I’m the President of the United States, the border will be secure" (1:36)

Here's what the Governor said in his book:

Texans in particular enjoy a unique culture that has been greatly enriched by immigrants from all over the world, and especially form Mexico. Our history is steeped in the unique melding of Mexican and Anglo cultures. We have already been burned once by false promises of border security in exchange for tying security to other aspects of the immigration debate. President Regan, in 1986, signed the immigration reform and control act, which legalized close to 3 million undocumented immigrants. The law was supposed to be a comprehensive solution with provisions intended to clamp down on border security. These provisions were never enforced, and the subsequent explosion in illegal crossings has resulted in some 11 million illegal aliens living in the United States today an estimated 1.8 million illegal immigrants are currently residing in Texas, compared with 1.1 million in 2000. In ten years, that represents an increase of 54 percent or 70,000 persons each year coming to our state illegally. Today, the Pew Hispanic Center estimates than about one in ten people born in Mexico live in the United States. And all of this has occurred outside the system and to the disadvantage of others who have been waiting in line for many years. There are literally millions of people waiting to get into the country legally. P.118-119

These levels of unchecked illegal immigration are unsustainable. We expend vast resources on illegal immigrants and our own security. State and local governments, which provide essential services like schooling and emergency health care to illegal immigrants, often under a mandate from the federal courts, bear the brunt of the immense fiscal burden. A 2007 study by the Congressional Budget Office reached several concussions relevant to this issue. Among them, the CBO pointed out that while most of the welfare or public assistance programs operated by the federal government, like Social Security, food stamps. And Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, are not available to illegal immigrants, the same federal government requires states to provide certain benefits to illegal immigrants in order for states to participate in programs receiving federal funds. Education is a good example. Emergency medical care is another; any health care facility receiving federal funds must provide certain care even for individuals who cannot pay for it, including many illegal immigrants.

A 2006 report by the Texas Comptroller’s office estimated the budgetary impacts of illegal immigration in Texas. The report found that approximately 135,000 undocumented students in Texas public schools cost the state $957million in just the 2004-2005 school year. Other studies using different population estimates and including federal spending have point to even higher costs of $1.2 billion (for the 2004-2005 school year) and $1.7 billion for the 2003 -2004 school year). The comptroller’s report cited incarceration and uncompensated healthcare as the two largest costs associated with illegal immigrants to local government entities in Texas These two items cost local governments $1. 4 Billion over a one year period. Of course those living in Texas illegally also provide income to the state because of increased economic activity, sales taxes, and property taxes (either directly or through rent subsidizing the property owner). But adding the estimated revenues and costs to both the state and local governments, Texas taxpayers were out $928 million in 2005.p. 120

The State Criminal Alien Assistance Program (SCAAP) is a case study in the refusal of the federal government to do its job at our borders. SCAAP was created in 1994 to reimburse states for part of the cost of incarcerating illegal immigrants who commit crimes.

Naturally, however, SCAAP is more window dressing than real policy, as it is woefully underfunded. A study commission by the United States/Mexico Border Counties Coalition found that in 2006, border counties in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas on the Mexican border received a total of only $4.7 million in SCAAP reimbursements, representing 9 percent of the costs of handling illegal immigrants who committed state crimes. Among just those border counties in Texas, the reimbursement rate was a mere 3 percent. The reimbursement rate is so low that some counties do not even apply for funding because it is not worth the cost of paperwork.

This is a joke. Arizona governor Jan Brewer has calculated that her state alone is owed &700 million in SCAAP funds since2003. Former Arizona governor Janet Napolitano wrote in 2008 that “as governor, I must enforce the law and pay to incarcerate these individuals. The federal government just shrugs its shoulders and wals away from its statutory obligation” Now serving as President Obama’s Secretary of Homland Security, she has not persuaded the federal government to step up to the plate.

The bottom line is that while our federal officials jealously claim exclusive authority over immigration and border policy, they avoid actually securing the border. While they mandate that state taxpayers provide services, they rarely confront any of the associated costs. In so doing, the federal Government refuses to fulfill its most basic constitutional responsibilities.

You seem to have switched gears on me. You brought up amnesty. In the post I replied to, it sounded like amnesty was OK because Reagan did it. Although I think voter ID was a very good thing, none of the titles of your links seem to have anything to do with Perry denying he would support a "path to citizenship" for illegals. I do have a 2011 link in which he said he would consider it:

Q:But just to be clear: if border security is accomplished, you can envision some sort of path to citizenship for people who are here illegally.

Perry: Sure.

Not only has Perry sounded like another GWB, but he sounded like a Dem when he said that if you didn't agree with him on the dream act you don't have a heart.

Care to point out *ANY* Republican candidate that has a position acceptable to conservatives?

Are you saying Romney really has a position on illegal immigration that you can believe and support? Or Santorum, or Cain, or Bachmann?

When all of the choices given are basically the same, you need to look at the *OTHER* defining points of the candidates to see what is what.

This type of vapid stupidity makes me f____g ILL.

My desire to see the law obeyed makes you f#$king ILL and you describe it as vapid stupidity?

Which laws do you think we should obey? The vapid stupid ones that only you in your omnipotence can dictate?

How does you opinion of my stupidity change the fact that perry has proven both by word and deed, that he is soft on ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION.

You can call me stupid {which is what people do when the facts are against their position}, but just disprove the fact that perry has repeatedly been against building the border fence.

Perry is in favor of tax payer dollars for ILLEGAL ALIENS.

Calling me vapidly stupid won't change the facts nor prove your brilliant point.

You and I have vastly different requirements for what we want in a President this election cycle.

From your post, it seems that the most important issues for you are illegal immigration and abortion.

My most important issues are: jobs, economic growth, the deficit, and getting the government off of my back (cutting the size and scope of the Federal government).

So, any attacks on a candidate on immigration may make me wince, but it ain’t going to change anything for me. Not this election cycle, at least.

I didn't infer that you're stupid. But sometimes un-stupid people have stupid ideas. Here is some of the stupid ideas I've been seeing on a forum of supposedly un-stupid people:

- Completely thrashing Perry over immigration when he's light-years better than Reagan and/or GWB ever were on the issue.

- Savaging the most viable conservative (mostly, a very solid one) we have because he's not a chest-pounder on immigration.

- Accusing Perry of being "open borders," which is absolute bull***t.

- Destroying Perry and so we wind up with Romney, or worse, OBAMA for another 4 years.

None of the people here thrashing Perry have a Plan B. Unless Herman Cain is Plan B - which amounts to no plan B at all.
