Well, if it hurt, it didn't hurt for very long. By the time one would feel the bullet penetrating the skin, his pain center would be destroyed, IMO. Although, as you say, I don't know. Perhaps someone could compare the speed of, say, a needle prick being felt to the speed of the bullet used.
On the other hand, I'm sure that the executee would feel the needle prick. I've certainly no taste for that, myself, although I don't consider that inhumane, either.
The important thing is to make sure you have the right man, penalties for prosecutors and police that failed to produce exonerating evidence would be a big step forward here), have a thorough appellate review, one time so that they can't just pull out their issues one at a time, and "git 'er done".
