A number of our friends are collaborating using Tonido (http://www.tonido.com) as a social networking tool. No cloud, no tracking, all traffic encrypted. It’s not a perfect system but it’s free and pretty easy to set up. Not for thousands but great for groups of a handful to hundreds.

FB is efficient.......... and insidious.
I agree, but the trail leads from any FReeper using Facebook back to this site when they visit (and maybe then to us).
I understand the benefits of technology, but unfortunately the government does, too; we are forging the manacles for them. It is incredible how people are willing to stand for this crap.
I guess Facebook has figured out what my wife has known for years:

Now, I'm extra glad that my instinct was right.
I heard a story about a young teen (using FB) who planned her birthday party. She invited a few friends (in the traditional sense of the word) but news of her party got out to her "friends" (in the FB sense.) "I just pooped. Are you going to Jane's BD party?"
Jane was devestated because her "friends" now know they're not all that much her friends.

That last part made me laugh.
Facebook - trying hard to make Google appear benign.
Just like Onstar didn’t mean to track you. If you believe that, you need to have your head examined.
