Controversy erupts over Campus Republicans bake sale plans

(CNN) -- Campus Republicans at the University of California Berkeley have cooked up a storm of controversy with their plans for a bake sale.

But it's not your everyday collegiate fundraiser they've got in mind. They've developed a sliding scale where the price of the cookie or brownie depends on your gender and the color of your skin.

During the sale, scheduled for Tuesday, baked goods will be sold to white men for $2.00, Asian men for $1.50, Latino men for $1.00, black men for $0.75 and Native American men for $0.25. All women will get $0.25 off those prices.

"The pricing structure is there to bring attention, to cause people to get a little upset," Campus Republican President Shawn Lewis, who planned the event, told CNN-affiliate KGO. "But it's really there to cause people to think more critically about what this kind of policy would do in university admissions."

Lewis says it's a way to make a statement about pending legislation that would let the California universities consider race or national origin during the admission process

These things have been going on for years, but I take exception to some of their pricing - all women only have to pay a quarter? Seems out of sync with their point . . .

If they were to do this right, they would pay Blacks and Latinos to take the cookies. People with no ID would get the cookies for free.

They should charge sixteen bucks for a muffin.

No women will get a $0.25 discount. Good looking women will get it free. :)

No —if the buyer is a woman, then she gets .25 off of the price for the ethnic race that she is.

So theoretically a Native American woman would get cookies for free.

Good job, College Republicans!

How can anyone have a problem with how people choose to price food that is voluntarily bought? Let the liberals have a fit.

Women get a quarter off from the price their male counterparts pay, native American women would get it for free I guess.

Black women, maybe; it seems that asian women would pay $1.25. What seems to be working is to show the mess it will create to attempt to determine how much everyone will pay...

What happens if a latino bearing a UCB ID crashes into the tables, completely drunk...? He is sent away with strictly NO cookies, right?

He may later apply for subsidies to cookie cooking school, yes?

“They should charge sixteen bucks for a muffin.”

This wasn’t DC. Only place they could get away with THAT.

Well, it turns out that the $16 per muffin was not accurate. The company that did the catering said that was fruit, coffee, muffins, and labor. They admitted the invoice was inaccurate in their description of the item being charged. I have been to these things, I knew this was the issue.

Why do we assume that all races are equally educated regarding cookie access? Have they looked into potential of hidden bias in marketing messages?

And I’m pretty sure this thread is giving off signs of passive racism.

Why no consideration for homosexual pricing mechanisms...?

This is not my bake sale, but I think the Campus Republicans should have to give any illegal immigrant the baked good free, along with a dollar.

It should have been better planned, because it gave an open to the leftie Student Government to throw them off campus, which is what they are considering.

Another poster posited paying minorities to take the cookies. Along that line, perhaps they should have stated that minorities would get extra goodies, while Whites only get what they pay for.

You admit your intolerance then, by your obviation of federally-funded desert rest/water stations, on the way to the bake sale.

Staunch your bubbling cauldron of brown-fearing HATE.

Good idea, and then they could take away the cookie from the other minorities, since it is basically what illegal immigration does. Maybe take two from the Blacks.

What about gay people? Aren’t they oppressed too? Or are you saving that issue for the hot dog roast?

HILTON claims the report was wrong. Justice stands by it; "In Washington, the contracted breakfast included fresh fruit, coffee, juice, muffins, tax and gratuity, for an inclusive price of US$16 per person," said the corporate parent of the Hilton, Conrad and Waldorf Astoria hotels.

"Dining receipts are often abbreviated and do not reflect the full pre-contracted menu and service provided," it explained.

The inspector general's office of the Justice Department, which keeps tabs on spending, told AFP it stood by the 148-page report, which came as Washington wrestles with a record deficit and a sluggish economy.

The audit released Tuesday found that Justice Department agencies spent far too much on conference catering in 2008 and 2009, when the economic crisis was in full swing.

The audit found that one conference served US$16 muffins, while another offered Beef Wellington hors d'oeuvres costing US$7.32 per serving.

It said coffee and tea at the events cost up to US$1.03 an ounce, meaning an eight-ounce cup would have cost more than eight dollars. The audit said US$4.4 million was spent on 10 events between October 2007 and September 2009, some of which "featured costly meals, refreshments, and themed breaks that we believe were indicative of wasteful or extravagant spending". - AFP http://www.bt.com.bn/travel/2011/09/25/claims-us-16-muffin-half-baked-says-hilton
