Lord Kinnock's daughter-in-law Helle Thorning-Schmidt is to become Denmarks first woman prime minister after winning a knife-edge victory in the countrys general election.
As the first votes came in on Thursday night, her centre-left coalition, which was the strong favourite to win, at one point fell behind the government, but pulled ahead by the end of the night to win 89 of the countrys seats next to the 86 seats won by the coalition led by Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen.
Addressing victorious Social Democratic Party members last night, Ms Thorning-Schmidt, 44, said: Today is the day things change in Denmark. This evening weve shown that the Social Democrats are a big and driving force in Denmark. Weve written history today.
Ms Thorning-Schmidts victory brings the Danish left back to power after ten years in opposition, and is likely to mean Denmark will be less hostile to moves towards closer economic co-ordination within the European Union.
It is also likely to mean a softening of the austerity measures brought in by the government of Mr Rasmussen, and an end to the continual tightening of the countrys immigration laws

The Welsh windbags Danish daughter-in-law...
Her father-in-law famously lost to John Major’s Conservatives in the 1992 general election after leading the polls for months. She said she would start government formation talks today with the Social Liberals, the left-wing Socialist People’s Party and the far-left party, the Red-Green Alliance.
She has promised to destroy a system of beefed-up customs controls at borders with Germany and Sweden.
She is also expected to roll back some of the austerity measures introduced amid Europe’s debt crisis, campaigning on a platform of tax rises and increased public spending.
Maybe 10 minutes closer to a resumption of the 30 years War’s resumption too.
Mr Kinnock pays income tax on his £110,000 salary in Switzerland, where tax rates are much lower [ a third ? ] than in Denmark.
Today is the day things change in Denmark.”
Sounds like she’s borrowed Obie’s teleprompters.
THat'll become the norm in Denmark, and won't the new PM be surprised when she discovers tax revenues FALLING in spite of her new higher rates?
But it's never about the actual revenues: it's always about the "social justice," which is code for "punishing the successful."
If tax revenue falls, oh well, at least they've punished "the rich."
Nile Kinnick was a helluva football player at the University of Iowa..... no, wait...
Helle Thorning-Schmidt promised voters more welfare spending in exchange for higher taxes.
Sounds like she will have Denmark on track to be another third world country in no time flat. She might want to get a few tips from great Britain to accelerate the process.
Joe Biden already has a plagiarized congratulatory speech, ready to read at her inauguration.
