McGinniss reports that Palin enrolled at the Hilo campus of the University of Hawaii after graduating from high school, and left after only three weeks because "the many people of color there made her nervous." At least this time he quoted someone by name - Palin's dad.
"They were a minority type of thing and it wasn't glamorous," Chuck Heath later explained.
But McGinniss never explained where or in what context Chuck Heath said that, much less to whom. I Googled the quote and found numerous references to Sam Tanenhaus' New Yorker review of Palin's memoir, Going Rogue. That review made reference to a book called Sarah From Alaska, written by Scott Conroy and Shushannah Walshe, which contained Heath's original assertion. I wondered what coauthor Walshe thought of McGinniss using the statement to build a case of Palin's racism. So I did something McGinniss never did - I asked her.
"So when Scott and I interviewed Chuck and [Palin's mother] Sally together for the book during an hours-long process that was very pleasant, Chuck did say that to us. It's in our book in full context," Walshe told me.
"He said that one of the reasons she left was she was a 'minority type thing,' meaning there were mostly other Pacific Islanders, etc., as opposed to homogeneous Wasilla. I do not think this makes Palin a racist. She was young and had spent very little time outside of Alaska, but that is what Chuck told us and I take him on his word."

I wonder truly how Scott Conroy and Ms. Walshe feel about this?
Complete take down of McGinniss!
People of color made her nervous? I guess she outgrew when she banged Glenn Rice (just kidding; I think this author is and idiot).
McGinnis is working for Roger Ailes the head of Fox. Google Gabriel Sherman Joe McGinnis.
as an aside....this article from Runner’s world on Sarah’s marathon ability and speculation the author just totally gets wrong....
Try 2012 Bud!
Well we knew MSNBC would prop him up....
Seems to be the only one’s without common decency...course we all knew that as well!>....lol
“So Walshe did not interpret Heath’s statement as an acknowledgment of racism. Not that such a detail would stop McGinniss from building on it.”
Yeah, she’s so racist that she married a guy who’s part Eskimo...
He must of missed that tidbit....great point!
and MAYBE had sex with a black guy.
Did Rice ever really say this happened?
but bozo wrote in his book he looked for communists, chicano’s , blacks so as not to be a sell out.
Funny how I never heard much about that from the same media outlets which report this crap.
Apparently it’s not even specifically stated in the book... McGinniss “extrapolates” that it happened. Yeah, right.
It’s a real lie-fest. Go back to the hundreds and hundreds of interviews the NYTimes and LATimes did up in Alaska in 2008. They interviewed every bloomin’ person Palin’s path crossed, even down to the most peripheral characters. All through high-school, college, and her working days. Read that stuff. If gives a vivid picture of her character, her goals in life, her morality. None of this crap in McGinniss’ book remotely comports with that mountain of interviews.
No one avoids Waikiki because they are uncomforable around Pacific Islanders; in fact millions of caucasian tourists flock there every year.
Note also the transfer from Hilo to Honolulu is perfectly natural. People who don't know Hawaii don't know Hilo is one of the rainiest places on earth. Honolulu, in contrast, has the wonderful climate most Americans associate with Hawaii.
Who are they kidding? There is a racism problem in Hawaii and it isn’t just in the imagination of a white kid from Alaska. Palin isn’t a racist, and everything in her life up to this point proves it. The fact that pigs like Matthews and McGinnis wallow in filth doesn’t mean that everyone does.
Wow. Smerconish is no Palin fan. In fact, he has a long history of criticizing her. Creepy Joe’s book must be THAT bad if so many Palin critics are condemning it.
re: “Well we knew MSNBC would prop him up....”
Wonder when BOR will have him on... /s
I wish she could sue the SOB for libel - but on the other hand that would just be playing his game.
What a total bastard - and the people who paid him to do this.
We’ll have all of this crap to put up with when “Deer In The Headlights” comes out, too. :p
I used to say I’d crawl over 10 miles of broken glass to vote for Sarah. After these revelations by McGinniss, I have reassessed that notion and no longer feel I would crawl over 10 miles of broken glass to vote for Sarah Palin. Now I’d crawl through 20 miles of broken glass and fire, carrying a gasoline gan to vote for Sarah Palin.
Frankly I don’t give a rip one way or the other.
