71-year-old Gullan Holmgren from Piteå, in northern Sweden, is 'too old' for pain rehab, according to the pain rehabilitation unit at the local hospital that turned her away.
I might be over 70, but that doesn't mean I am dead yet, said an outraged Holmgren to The Local.
Holmgren, who has had chronic pain after an unsuccessful hip operation six years ago, sought help through her primary care provider, the local clinic in Piteå where she lives.
After trying all sorts of pain relief to no avail, her doctor referred her to the pain rehabilitation unit at Sunderby Hospital.
Holmgren then waited to be called for an appointment but instead received a letter from her doctor telling her she had been turned down for treatment at the rehabilitation unit. The reason she was too old.
The rehabilitation unit at Sunderby Hospital is specialised to help chronic pain sufferers overcome their disabilities.
The staff work in specialised teams and the treatment is aimed at patients aged between 18 and 65 people of a "professional" age.
It makes me feel like if I am too old to work then I am not allowed help to cope with my pain, Holmgren said.
Holmgren's daughter, 37-year-old Linda, broke her leg earlier in the year and has since experienced the same chronic pain as her mother.
But Linda received treatment within a few weeks.
Why can't my mother get the same help? IS life really meant to be over after 65? I only wish I could give my mother my treatment instead, Linda Holmgren told daily Aftonbladet.
However, at the hospital they say that it isn't that uncommon for specialised units to have age restrictions.
The problem is rather that the county's geriatric care units, which is where Holmgren should be referred to due to her age, don't have the resources in place to deal with these cases.
But it has been decided at the hospital that we will train a team to be able to treat older patients and so we are going to be able to provide help for them in the future, Karin Hellsten, senior clinic administrator for the pain rehabilitation unit, told The Local.
The decision has been made but how long the recruitment and training period will take, Hellsten couldn't say. In the mean time the local clinics will have to refer elderly patients with chronic pain to Umeå, were there is specialist help to get even for older patients.
But according to Gullan Holmgren, the trip of 200 kilometres from Piteå to Umeå would be too much for her on a regular basis. She is pleased that the hospital will be able to provide help for chronic pain sufferers in the future.
But it might take some time before they have it up and running, and what do people like myself do in the mean time?, she said to The Local.
That’s ridiculous. 70 is far from old.
“Ive always looked at socialized medicine as being somewhat like veterinary care for livestock. Farmers have their livestock treated, if they can be reasonably confidant that the livestock are worth more to them economically than the cost of the care. An infected cow will be administered antibiotics. But a cow with cancer wont get MRIs or expensive therapies.
Everything about big government betrays a fundamental belief that the only reason citizens exist is for the benefit of those in power. Politicians have endless special projects; were the cash cows who fund them. And when we cant fund them any more, and we become overall liabilitieswell, theres no reason to spend on our medical care, is there?”
Deserves a repost.
My dad will turn 71 in another month and he’s healthier than I am. Heck, he’s healthier than most people half his age.
When Obamacare turns us into another Sweden they’ll start building the ‘containment units’ for the ‘category one’ people, like they did in Torchwood: Miracle Day.
That ain’t an option, in my book. Free people must fight against the ever-creeping government control with everything they’ve got.
“Logan’s Run” and Ira Levin’s “This Perfect Day” were what first came to my mind when I read this article-a government controlled lifespan for all, coming soon to a country near you...
Regarding the “natural beauties” Welch and Loren-my daughter keeps up with that celebrity stuff, and informs me that Loren has had more than one facelift, and uses botox, just like Nancy Pelosi. Welch is said to have gotten a nose job and fake boobs when she first came to Hollywood to increase her marketability-she also supposedly has other surgical enhancements to her face, and has used botox. Both of their faces do have that botox-plumped look that Pelosi has. Apparently, both of these women are, as my British neighbor would say, “mutton made out to be lamb”.
I’m 86 and I’m probably healthier than most younger people. I go to my doctor once a year for a checkup, but otherwise don’t have any need for any kind of treatment. A friend of mine is 94 and she still drives and plays the piano at her church every Sunday.
LOL!!!
I'm guessing you are a gurl.... :-)
I am healthy too. I hope to be healthy at 86 and beyond. Congrats to you!
We need to get rid of all the old people who have not been brainwashed by government schools ASAP.
Tina Turner is Asian ?
Line up each morning for the Selektion. Arbeit macht frei.
Must be a socialist rag, hmmm.
Her whole amoral socialist country is creepy, too....at least to those who value life.

Oh, I don’t doubt that it’s her, it just looks like she’s had some “work” done.
LOL! Probably most over 70 in Hollywood have, except for Betty White - (I just LOVE her!)
Can't remember the screen name, but he can probably reassure us that this lady “at least owns a new Volvo, and her own house”.
After all, he regularly reminds us that Sweden is the greatest country in the world, and all countries should emulate Sweden's way of doing things.
No need for the sarcasm tag. My post was just affirming your position. My mom, who is now 93, began having pretty severe back pain a few years ago due to spine compression pinching a nerve. She finally had spinal a procedure called kyphoplasty which helped her. But prior to that, her pain was bad enough that she often had trouble keeping her food down. Do these people expect us to let our parents starve to death if the system won’t allow us to get them treated?
