I have a question... since I don't have children, I don't know the answer to this... Don't they require that your children have a whole assortment of vaccinations anyway? Not that I agree with that, but how is this vaccine any different from the whole cocktail of vaccines your four-year-old is required to have before starting public school?

Just tell kids a shot is required before engaging in sex. Those legs will clamp shut faster than anything else you could tell them.

I think that if you're going to have your kids in public schools, then the standard set of shots (MMR, tetanus, polio, etc.) are required, because of the communicability of those diseases. I had to get them when I was in school. Not that I think children should be forced to, but at least its understandable, because of how one kid could spread measles, etc. to all the others, before they even knew they had it.

The HPV is not communicable other than by having sex, and as such, doesn't seem to present as much of an acute health risk, which makes it even less justifiable for forcible vaccination in my mind.

Yes, including for Hepatitis B, a blood or body fluid born virus not spread through causal contact, commonly spread through sex.

A Libertarian Doctor called into a talkshow regarding an incident where kids who refused to get vaccinated were not permitted to go to school. The whole deal with vaccinations is that the effectiveness of vaccination is dependent on other people getting shots.

The only reason people complain about the HPV vaccine is that people consider this a state licence to fornicate. This, of course, is ridiculous. The State is trying to headoff a wave of healthcare cost of treating cases of cancer in populations who cannot afford cancer treatment.

It is cheaper to pay $35 per vaccine than it is to pay hundred of thousands of dollars in healthcare cost per person. If you were the State of Texas what would you bet on - $35 per person or $500,000 per person?

One big difference is the mortality rate. Another, for some but not all of the mandated vaccines, is communicability.

The mortality rate for influenza is greater than for HPV. If 10,000 people get flu, and 10,000 people get HPV, more will die from flu and complications than from HPV.

Measles, diptheria, whooping cough are highly contagious, and have higher mortality rates than influenza.

Did you forget to put the Sarcasmn Tag (/s) on this post. Surely you're not serious. AIDS didn't stop people from having sex so fear of a needle certainly will not curtail teen promiscuity.

This vaccine is different in a number of ways. First, the other vaccines are for diseases/illnesses that are communicable in the air or by touch. Everyone is vulnerable to getting those illnesses.

HPV is a sexually transmitted disease.

With all vaccines you have to weigh the benefits of the vaccine against the risks.

For example, my girls got the DPT shot because they almost died of a respiratory illness (RSV) when they were babies. The doctors said they would probably die if they caught whooping cough, and there has been lots of whooping cough in California. So there is a huge benefit of taking the DPT shot, and we determined it was well worth the risk of the side-effects.

For gardisil, my girls (who are now 14) are not sexually active. There is no benefit to them getting the shot at this time. There will be a benefit later on when they are sexually active, but not now. The risks for this vaccine for outweigh the benefits of this vaccine at this time.

yes..schools do generally require docs report and it will list shots and allergies or asthma etc

I have seen some folks like chiropractors kids and other holistic type “doctors” offspring avoid it...don’t know how though...

Summer camps like Alpine where my kids go on Lookout Mountain Alabama require the same things essentially.

It’s lawyer driven in that case.

Myself having grown up around polio etc as a kid and being the first to take that..in sugar cubes (training for me for my youth..lol) and smallpox scar vac...I think vaccinations are fine..in fact they are incredible really when you look at historical context

but state mandating vaccinations for behavioral issues does raise questions

Answer: Yes (require, meaning for practical purposes, yes)

Not that I agree with that, but how is this vaccine any different from the whole cocktail of vaccines your four-year-old is required to have before starting public school?

It is for a sexually transmitted disease and is required for girls only.
