Iraq's Sadr says to halt attacks on U.S. troops

(Reuters) - Iraq's fiercely anti-American cleric Moqtada al-Sadr on Sunday called on his followers to suspend attacks against U.S. troops to ensure they leave Iraq by a year-end deadline.

But the Shi'ite cleric, whose Mehdi Army militia fought U.S. forces until 2008, warned that if they did not depart on time, military operations would resume and be "very severe."

"Because of my eagerness to accomplish the independence of Iraq and have the invader forces withdraw from our holy land, it has become imperative for me to stop military operations ... until the invader forces complete their withdrawal," Sadr said in a statement read out by his spokesman Salah al-Ubaidi.

"If not, the military operation will start again and with new approaches, and it will be very severe."

American troops are scheduled to withdraw fully by December 31, more than eight years after the 2003 invasion, but Iraq's leaders are currently negotiating with the United States on whether to retain U.S. military trainers beyond 2011.

If there’s only one reason we should not have gone in and liberated Iraq, that man is one.

So sad that the US is leaving Iraq to an Iranian trained and supported Islamic fundamentalist. In case anyone has forgotten his/her geography, Iraq is right next door to Saudi Arabia. Nothing would please the Iranians as much as destabilizing Saudi Arabia, and it is right within their grasp.

The Saudi monarchy is corrupt, authoritarian and frankly speaking, ripe for overthrow. If Syria goes, Saudi Arabia will totter and fall.

I am scared.

What have we got now? We’ve got an increasingly unfriendly Egypt, an aggressive Turkey, a Sunni fundamentalist Syria and Iran.

Israel stands alone.

The only foreign option for the US in the Middle East is to unite its friend(s) and divide its enemies (Syria, Libya, Egypt, Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia). If the US allows these nations to unite behind a common Islamic identity - we are in for quite a bit of trouble.

Alliance should have taken that shi’t out when they surrounded the mosque he was in early during the Iraq 2 War.

Instead, they let him out to ‘negotiate’ and have a truce.

How many times since has been come back to haunt the Alliance forces?

Obama could bow down to that. As far as retaining our guys in Iraq beyond 2011 as trainers for Iraq’s military, Zero will have a solution: Train them here in good old Anytown, USA. Nothing good will ever come out of his administration.

Hindsight is 20/20 and my views might be controversial, but I think Iraq was the greatest geo-strategic blunder committed by the United States in living memory.

Saddam Hussein was a particularly nasty piece of business, but after observing seven years of military operations in Iraq, I am beginning to understand why Arab / Islamic societies tend to produce leaders like Saddam Hussein / Gaddafi / Mubarak.

The US military will never be able to successfully deal with situations like Iraq unless it changes its rules of engagement. But that is neither likely nor advisable - Russia, China and other rising powers are watching how the US Military conducts its business.

Consequently, the US needs to emphasize covert operations and smart diplomacy. It will be extremely stupid to push for a million man invasion of Iran if targeted strikes can destroy Iran's nuclear infrastructure.

Those consequences should have been thought out once the idea of taking out Iraq was evolving.

Iraq was a natural buffer to Iran and a devil we knew.

However, all of that matters not to central planners who think they can bring peace and stability to a cursed land; no matter the cost to our treasure and citizen.

The US is about to make the same mistakes in Africa. It has a shiny new combatant command called AFRICOM. Libya was AFRICOM’s first outing and with the success of Libya there will be pressure to do something bigger in the near future.

I can see the US getting sucked into Sudan and Somalia (and possibly Nigeria) in a very big way within this decade.
