Starbucks CEO hosts town hall on politics (calls on businesses to stop political contributions)

Portland, OR

[snip]..... The forum comes weeks after [Starbucks CEO Howard] Schultz called on other CEOs to halt contributions to U.S. political campaigns until the nation's leaders become financially disciplined and stop their political wrangling. The CEOs of more than 100 companies, from AOL to Zipcar, joined Schultz in his pledge to halt contributions and do what they could to stimulate growth in their industries.

Schultz, who heads Seattle-based Starbucks, which operates more than 17,000 stores globally, said he was moved to hold the forum after receiving hundreds of emails and letters from citizens. They were struggling to find jobs, keep their homes or send their children to school given the economic conditions.

"It looks like we struck a nerve with so many people," Schultz told the Associated Press. "I feel a personal responsibility to create a public dialogue and make a voice for people who feel like they can't be heard."

The forum will be hosted by nonpartisan group No Labels and held the same week as the GOP presidential debate and the President's address to a joint session of Congress to share his plan for job creation.

"America is at a fragile and critical moment in its history," Schultz said in his letter. "We must restore hope in the American Dream."

While it's a divisive time in politics, analysts don't anticipate the move will have any negative impact on the company's bottom line. "Even if someone doesn't agree with his personal opinion, it is unlikely to send them elsewhere for coffee," said Bart Glenn, an analyst with D.A. Davidson.

This guy’s company gave 99+ percent of its money to Democrats.

This is just another whiny liberal who’s upset that, after November 2010, Obama, Pelosi and Reid aren’t getting everything they want immediately.

Shut up and make my coffee, *itch.

Why would “hundreds” of average people write to this guy, other than to ask for some stock tips on Starbucks?

They are not contributions, but merely purchased rights of exclusive position within the US and state tax codes. The tax codes are written for this purpose.

This is all pretend. This is a distraction.

These people, companies and unions will do the groundwork for Obama and the Democrats. Don’t let them make our side get complacent.

No Labels is “non-partisan” my big toe.

Dec, 14, 2010:

“At Columbia University in New York City, on December 13, a centrist group is going to form a “No Labels” centrist movement to promote civility in American politics.

Among those who will engage in this new movement are the following: Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York City; former Republican Florida Congressman Joe Scarborough, MSNBC talk show host of “Morning Joe”; retiring Democratic Senator Evan Bayh of Indiana; Independent Senator Joe Lieberman of Connecticut; Democratic Senator Debby Stabenow of Michigan; former Republican Congressman Tom Davis of Virginia; Republican Congressman Christopher Shays of Connecticut; Democratic Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa of Los Angeles; and former Republican Governor Christie Todd Whitman of New Jersey, among others!

The group is against hyper partisanship, and promotes civility, calm, reason, and cooperation. Prominent fundraisers are involved in the new movement, and the hope is to form chapters in all 50 states..... [snip]

Bingo! Uber-liberal Starbucks complaining about “political wrangling.” If he were to call for a restoration of Constitutional law, balanced budgets, and ending all government Ponzi “social democratic” Ponzi schemes, I would have been impressed.

No, I think this is really directed at stopping contributions to Bambi. Starbucks may be owned and populated entirely by Democrats, but even they are beginning to wonder when the Eye of the Government is going to turn to them.

I travel a fair amount, and I can tell you that Starbucks has virtually replaced McDonalds as a symbol of American commerce in many countries. Ergo, Starbucks is going to be a target of the Bambi administration, and I think that having the Starbucks CEO put this in general terms is his way of saying he doesn’t want to be forced to contribute to Obama, who if he gets reelected will, of course, target any successful business and particularly those that are internationally successful.

Even Dem businesses in the US are scared right now.

The Starbuck’s CEO is a Trojan Horse...a long time liberal supporter.

He calls for “stopping the partisanship”, but he means by that “Raise Taxes”.

That’s the strategy of the Dems: Call everyone extreme obstructionist who doesn’t agree to “some” tax increases.

That is not a new position for the dems. That’s the same position repackaged in a new promotion campaign.

I think you’ve got that wrong. One reason I say that is that this guy is specifically herding people towards “No Labels”. Why do that? Does he need to use such a group? Ahhh...no.

Does he turn the “eye” of the government towards himself much sooner by this “threat”? Yes. Is he going to risk doing that if he is worried about such? No.

The paltry amount these businesses contribute won’t make any difference in this election. Breaking the TEA party by leading people towards a “kinder, gentler,NON-partisan “group” (socialist No Labels) is certainly a goal of this administration, and it’s cronies - like this guy.

No, this guy isn’t legit. Now that guy from Las Vegas - he was legit. This starbucks “no contributions” crap is damage control.

How does this move relate to the SOTU challenge of Supreme Court decision? Someone here has suggested it is a "Trojan Horse" for another agenda. In other words, one has to look behind all the "doors" these days.

So-called "progressives" never fairly evaluate the role of labor union political contributions when they decry so-called "corporate" moneys. Caution, and close examination of the semantics of this CEO's position are critical as 2012 approaches.

Isn’t this guy Schultz part of that new Democrat group, “No Labels”, that’s supposed to replace the laughingstock “MoveOn.org”?

Is Starbucks unionized?

The ability to run an espresso machine seems to be about the skill level of your average SEIU member - I’m sure stores full fo those thugs would do wonders for his business.

then, instead of voting like a guilty riddled white person, they should vote like a patriotic American and support the candidates that will allow them to hire the most and expand the most and create the most jobs, thereby helping the country. Not support a bunch of half-assed commies that want to confiscate wealth.
If they feel so guilty about being successful, they can give their income that the commie democrats want to give to their union pals through government spending, and redirect it toward the charity of their choice or create a charity that helps people pay for medical care, or kids pay for school.

These are smart people and they know what time it is and they know Obama is bad for business. I just wish more would come out and say it.

“No Labels” means “No Balls”, imo.
