Exterminators were back in the Longmont Public Library on Monday morning after a weekend visit by a “bedbug dog” found nine infested chairs, including two that were treated last week.

The pests were initially spotted Aug. 18. An exterminator on Aug. 19 found five chairs had been infested and used carbon dioxide to freeze the insects. On Sunday, two of the treated chairs caught the attention of Macaroni, a beagle-mix trained to sniff out living bedbugs, indicating that the insects had either survived or been brought back into the library.
The library has not closed and the treated chairs have not been taped off or swapped out.
“Yes, we are staying open,” Anderson said in an email to the library staff Monday. “Bedbugs are present in our society and anyone at anytime could walk through our door and reinfest the chairs. So, we can’t close until the problem is taken care of, because the problem will continue as long as patrons from infested homes are visiting us.”

In the case of public libraries, I’m more inclined to think that it’s the bedbugs who are bringing in the people.

Those things are tough to kill.
I had one between my fingers and I squeezed as hard as I could and when I dropped it, it continued to scurry away.
I’ve read using a steam cleaner is also a good way to kill them because the steam is at almost 100 degrees hotter than they can stand.
Public libraries serve as lounges for homeless people. Here in San Diego the city is wasting a ton of money building a new Taj Majal library in the downtown re-development (skid row) district. It will make a nice home for the street people and their bed bugs.

I work in the Pentagon, and the building guys strongly advocate steam cleaning as the best way without tossing around alot of toxic fumes (which everyone hates). My guess...without DDT around...every single house in America will have a steam cleaner within five years.
Yet another reason for me to never visit a public library.
You’d think the Pentagon would have phasers or something from the black project to deal with them. :)
They used the planet killing carbon dioxide to freeze kill the bugs but you could hear the Ozone screams form northern Colorado. /s
I hope we regain sanity and bring back DDT.
How about having the bedbug-sniffing dog check out the “patrons” before letting them into the library?

That stuff really works. I had a run-in with the little critters a couple of years ago. One application with a fogger and the problem was solved. 100% non-toxic to pets and humans, but if you spray a small amount on a bedbug it is dead literally in one second. The only ingredients are cedar oil and hydrated silica (the main ingredient in toothpaste).
The last time we got a case of bedbugs was in a Saguache CO, hotel in 1954.
Oh the little buggers were constant companions of my childhood. Periodic dragging of beds, mattresses & springs into the yard for a good spraying and cleaning. They always came back.
