Seattle Green Jobs Program Gets $20M, Creates 14 Posts

By Dan Springer

Published August 29, 2011 | FoxNews.com

A green jobs program in one of America's greenest cities is being called a bust 16 months after a $20 million federal grant to weatherize homes in Seattle ended up putting just 14 people to work in mostly administrative jobs and upgrading only three homes in the area.

"The jobs are not there," Todd Myers, who wrote the book "Eco Fads," told Fox News. "So we're training people for jobs that don't exist."

Seattle is not alone. The Department of Energy has allocated $508 million to 41 states for its Better Buildings Neighborhood Program and 600 jobs have been created or retained.

"While communities are advancing their programs at different rates, we are pleased with the progress," the agency wrote in a recent statement.

One year into the three-year program, 9,000 homes have had energy audits and received some kind of upgrade. The goal is to weatherize 150,000 homes by 2013 and save consumers $65 million annually on energy bills.

Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn says it's too early to declare the program a failure.

"We may have to adjust how we market it and the incentives we provide," McGinn said. "Nobody has really cracked the green jobs code."

20, 000, 000 divided by 14 jobs is $1, 428, 571.43 per job.

I'll fake being a greenie for that much.

It’s putting in insulation, a solar panel or planting a tree for the sake of avoiding carbon output.

Plain and simple.

In the old days, you would do the following for the following reasons:

Insulation - to stay warmer or cooler and save energy costs

Solar panels - to save money and use “free” solar power

Planting trees - to beautify your yard, make a place for kids to play and create shade.

Government and the Greentards have infiltrated every aspect of life and make unionized Government workers, paid for life, become stewards of society by forcing Global Warming paranoia, accepted as fact, to do common sense tasks.

It is the creeping Marxist who continues his march to death and starvation.

“...600 jobs have been created or retained”

I love that. Not sure if that is what ol’ Ben Franklin was getting at with his “A penny saved is a penny earned” thing though.

All depends on your definition of green. Guess the gubmint has a different one than the tree-huggers do...

No, no that is a green frog!

I need to know what a green job is...I mean do green jobs produce green? Do green jobs require its workers to wear green?

What does “green” even mean?

How can I explain the term “green jobs” to a blind person?

I think the next time I get unemployment, Ima just tell ‘em I’m only applying for green jobs and see how well that goes over :P

$20M to weatherize 3 homes? I think the same program weatherized a dozen or so homes in Austin.

So.... where is the money really going?

OH!

So, in other words-

A scam!

Perhaps these “green job” stories are not being reported in the proper light!

Going green is bad for the poor.

That 14 million could have feed tens of thousands of inner city yuts.

That's the beauty of leftist bureaucracies.

I taught myself how to properly caulk a window many years ago, and I did not require six weeks of Federal jobs educations to learn how to operate a frickin’ caulking gun.

Ditto with a hand stapler and batts of insulation.

Double Ditto with the rental machine and 25 bales of blown in insulation. Be glad my Missus isn’t here to tell you at length what an absolute joy it was for her to feed the machine while I manned the outlet hose in the attic...

I also figured out all by my lonesome self, how to replace all of my own windows and doors with modern grade double paned glass, upgrade our water heater, install a new garage door opener, take down a 60 foot cherry tree in the back yard, cut it up and split it into stove-sized pieces and stack it.

And in all of that time I have never once had anyone stop by and offer to give me a hand either for pay or for free, whether they worked for the Gubmint or not. I can’t even find a 15 year old kid around here who knows how to operate a lawnmower, much less cut my grass the way I want it done, so I doubt any of those young geniusi, products of a Free Public Education (that I paid for out the yin-yang) are even motivated enough to go get themselves “trained” to do any of the work I mentioned.

And on top of it, if I were an employer out looking for new, motivated employees to hire for my home improvement business doing any of the aforementioned work, the last guy I would hire is one who has nothing more than 99 weeks of unemployment on his recent resume, because that tells me he’s a lazy-ass who has allowed what few eye-hand coordination skills he ever had in his rapidly dimming “professional” past to deteriorate to the point that it proves that I am much better off doing the work for myself in the first place...

That is all.
