One of the oddities that seemed out of whack in this morning's weekly Unemployment Claims update was the explanation for the spike in this week's receipents of government generosity: apparently it had to do with the BLS handing out weekly benefits checks to striking Verizon workers. We will repeat the key word from that sentence because it bears repeating: "striking." Now, we may be wrong here, but if one is striking, one is not u-n-e-m-p-l-o-y-e-d, and hence the US government should probably not be using taxpayer money to double pay such individuals who have singlehandedly decided to forgo pay in return for making a labor statement. Otherwise, it kinda kills the whole "sacrifice" thing. And, lo and behold, as it turns out, we are not wrong. From JP Morgan: "Striking workers are generally not eligible to receive unemployment insurance benefits, but it looks like about half of the total amount of striking workers filed claims over these two weeks to formally determine their eligibility." Generally... except when the administration is willing to hand out money to anything and everything with a pulse. After all, there is that massive $2.2 trillion Bank of America balance sheet that has to be funded. And with direct reserve funding already failed, as per QE1 and 2, the only other possible way is via deposit increases. Alas, by the time this money could possibly be saved, it has been spent 5 times, the other 4 hitting Bank of America's bad credit card receivables department.

The list, ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
This is incorrect. They filed, but their claims will be denied. If their claims are not denied, then there is a story. I have not seen any reports that check were actually cut.
amazing.
i thought unions had a fund of their own for strikes.
Who would have thunk it?
Well isn’t this interesting. the strikers filed for unemployment even though I guarantee you they knew and were told by the union they were not eligible.
I guess they wanted to see if the people at their state unemplpyment were too stupid
But his hurts 0dumbo even when it turns out they will be denied.
Yes there are unions funds for strikes and amazingly IF the union had not called off the strike the unions would have had to start paying the stikers next week
That makes too much sense, although we can hope they are denied
“A federally-subsidized labor union strike. “
Holder’s people? Nah, couldn’t be. n/s
Union bosses always tell striking workers to file for unemployment. It gets them off their back. But they never get any benefits.
Just goes to show how dumb and entitled many of our citizens are. Refusing to go to work and expecting the gov’t to pay you to do so? What a concept!
This is more than corruption. This is a coup de’ tat by special interests and the extreme left.
Waiting to see which candidate mentions prison sentences...
Who says they filed? The AP?
The whole "unemployment skewed by the strike" meme is a total fabrication put out by the WH.
OK.
So that means we have the White House (you know, that “official” source of United States’ policies and regulations and enforcement and economic priorities ?) claiming loudly and in public that striking union members ARE RESPONSIBLE for the rise in unemployment figures BECAUSE they are deliberately doing something illegal to get money illegally from the public. Right?
But - the AP and the mainstream media ABCNNBCBS are both covering for the illegal activities of the union - almost regardless of whether the claims will be accepted - and I assure, YES, they will be accepted by the government union “workers” processing the illegal claims! Worse, if this IS the reason for the rise in unemployment, then the media is encouraging both lies (from the Obama regime) and the illegal activity from the union.
Who says they filed?
The Labor Dept
from the link
“The Department of Labor noted that the Verizon worker strike generated about 12,500 claims during the week ending August 13 and about 8,500 claims the week ending August 20 (not seasonally adjusted”
Did the strikers really file even though anyone but a idiot would know they don’t qualify?
it will be interesting to see how this plays out. If the strikers did file won’t the reduce the number once they are denied?
If Joe Smith filed for unemployment, I'd say he's no longer on strike, he's UNEMPLOYED (he must have quit).
When strike's over, Verizon should have the option to either rehire him at bottom of pay scale or let him go.
Didn’t they go on strike because of the higher health care premiums DUE TO OBAMACARE? Well then, it would make perfect sense that they would get unemployment benefits in this bizzarro world that UhBummer is creating.
Just goes to show how dumb and entitled many of our citizens are. Refusing to go to work and expecting the govt to pay you to do so? What a concept!
______________
Amen.
Dems buying votes with tax money, plain and simple.
One of the reasons the union called off the strike when they did is because if it had gone on for another week, they would have been obligated to shell out 10M a week in strike benefits.
i see.
