NEW YORK (AP) -- The price of gold hit its latest record high, near $1,830 an ounce, as investors spooked by the prospect of a return to recession sought out safety Thursday in the precious metal.
Gold prices have more than doubled since the recession began in late 2007. They've risen about 19 percent since the beginning of June, as European leaders struggled to keep the debt crisis from infecting the region's major economies and U.S. politicians nearly drove the country to the brink of default, prompting Standard & Poor's to cut the country's AAA credit rating.
Morgan Stanley on Thursday cut its forecast for global economic growth for this year and 2012, saying the U.S. and the 17 countries that use the euro were "hovering dangerously close to a recession."

I wondered what dessert was served on the last dinner of the Titanic. Ice cream or beer? The cigar is mandatory.

Don’t you wish you had bought it then?
Didn’t they go after Glen Beck and something about $800 gold?
Well, I did see one guy buy an ammo box filled with Krugerrands. It wasn’t mine, but I was there.
“Whats silver selling for these days?”
Last time I checked it was just above $40 an ounce, which seems undervalued to me. It’s not as exciting as gold, but it has long use as money, and it’s what the dollar is defined in by our Constitution. It’s been lagging behind, but I expect it will catch up in proportional value (note: I am no expert nor advisor, just someone interested). This site: www.coinflation.com is a good one to keep up on its price per ounce, as well as the value of our older silver-containing coins.
Thanks. It’s good to know that silver is doing well. Shoulda bought more when it was at $17 an ounce. But, “Noooo,” Mrs. OP screams, “that’s enough!”
And thanks to you, too.
By the way, does that handle, silverleaf, have any metallic connotation?
I bought when it was around $250. Silver was about $6 then, too.
