Fact checking Rick Perry Announcement Speech
Washington Post ^ | Aug 15, 2011 | Glenn Kessler

Well, goodbye Tim Pawlenty, hello Rick Perry. The Texas governor announced that he is running for president on Saturday, just hours before the Ames Straw Poll in Iowa that ended Pawlenty’s presidential aspirations. As has been our custom, we will take a look at some of the assertions made in Perry’s announcement speech and then render a blended Pinocchio rating.

“Since June of 2009, Texas is responsible for more than 40 percent of all of the new jobs created in America. Now think about that. We’re home to less than 10 percent of the population in America, but 40 percent of all the new jobs were created in that state.” This is a great-sounding statistic, and likely will form the core of Perry’s campaign against a presidency that thus far has negative job creation. But, as always, there needs to be some context.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas has especially promoted this figure, and even it acknowledges that the number comes out differently depending on whether one compares Texas to all states or just to states that are adding jobs.

Since Texas is adding jobs, and many other states are losing jobs, Texas’s gains become out-sized in a general national survey. Texas, as a state rich in oil and national gas, has also benefited from increases in energy prices that have slowed the economy elsewhere in the country. Higher energy prices have meant more jobs in Texas. Though Perry proudly claims the job growth is the result of a low-tax, anti-regulatory environment, others have pointed to a big investment in education in the 1980s that, yes, was the result of a tax increase.

His emphasis on jobs puts Perry out front if it holds up.

Fact checking, huh? How quaint.
Are we vetting the candidates now? That should be fun and sell a lot of newspapers.

I eagerly await the Post's detailed expose of Obama's lies, questionable associates, and shady past.

The Washington Compost fact checking anything is a joke. I especially like the spin that Obummer isn't an apologist. Nice try dopes.

Just trying to get in before all the Perry bashing starts.
Go, Rick, Go..

BTW, I was and am a Palin Supporter, but she hasn’t announced yet, so being a practical person, I will support Perry. If she does, I will make a final decision before the Primaries. It’s dependent on how their respective campaigns go..that depends on is if she decides she’s in or out.

If they are fact checking Perry, it must mean that there are no more Palin stones left to peek under.

Hi sockmonkey, that is right where I am waiting and watching Palin and Perry. I excluded Bachman and Cain from my list of possibles because while I really like them both, I am not sure they are ready. Maybe I will add them back to my list but not yet.

"I eagerly await the Post's detailed expose of Obama's lies, questionable associates and shady past."

You can wait for the killer of Nicole Simpson to expose himself, a solid case that Vince Foster killed himself, the confirmation of Sasquatch and the Yeti, and proof of aliens abducting earthlings before the Post and the Times thoroughly investigate Obama in any aspect.

I just hope Sarah announces. If not than Michele Bachmann gets my vote. In the general, I don’t know yet. A President Perry does not excite me at all. I heard his speech and really thought it was President Bush speaking. Oh well. We have a long way to go before we know who the nominee is.

I don’t think they want to fact check the Kenyan Bandit. I think they’re afraid they’ll find 0ut that, besides being a bandit, he really IS a Kenyan.

Rick is the Big Dog. The only reason he is in this thing is because the GOP doesn’t have any big dogs. He will run with them and over them. Sure, he isn't perfect, but, as with his awful Gardasil decision, he realized it was a mistake and already diffused, for now, that issue. (Gave a great answer to that one today.)

Romney won't apologize for socialized medicine in Mass (a complete debacle!). Bachmann is a legislator - no responsibility except to show up and say yes or no (Obama didn't even bother to do that). I don't want any more legislators trying to become an executive overnight. Different skill package. She doesn't have it, as much as I respect here education and background.

Sarah is the only one with a record of getting things done as an executive. I think she is genuine and smart, she is simply disliked by too many people, and most of the others think she is not up to the job. Sorry, she can't win.

Job one is getting the White House. We can't let the prefect (which doesn't exist) be the enemy of this goal.

Texas Economy and Texas Jobs...is Rick Perry's record...nothing else is much of a concern for Americans except this....and rightly so....NO ONE ELSE who is running and/or may yet to announce can touch this...

Forbes recently put out the 8 top boom towns in America and Texas has 4 of them.

Yep - Jobs is the issue not Sharia law or some other smokescreen. Other candidates have to put something for jobs on the table to beat Perry.
