New York's iconic Statue of Liberty is to close for a year for renovations.
The 305ft (93m) copper statue needs $27.5m (£16.8m) in repairs, US Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said.
The National Park Service said new stairs and elevators would be installed within the 125-year-old statue, but Liberty Island would remain open.
The statue, dedicated in 1886, was given to the US by France. Most of the 3.5m people who visit Liberty Island each year do not climb the statue.
Visitors were barred from venturing up inside the statue in the wake of the 9/11 terror attacks, although they were allowed back into the observation deck a few years later.
However, officials now judge that out-of-date facilities make the statue itself, and not those visiting it, a safety risk.

Oh, and a wheel chair ramp to the crown.
He’s replacing the torch with the hammer and sickle./s
It’s covered under the “Muslims with Disabilities Act of 2011”.
Statue of Liberty closed for a year?
What’s next? Obama declares Marshall Law, suspends Habeus Corpus, and signs an Executive Order directing law enforcement to arrest and imprison all TEA Partiers? /s
Exactly, that’s the provision that states taxpayers must replace limbs lost during explosive making 101.
To quote Bammy during his infamous La Raza speech:
Believe me, the idea of doing things on my own is very tempting. I promise you.
An interesting fact that most visitors do not climb the Statue.
What else is on the island to attract a visitor? The Souvenir stand where they sell Chinese made replica’s
I was fortunate enough to climb those stairs 50 years ago
The last time I was there was with my parents, probably 50 years or more ago.
We even went in the arm up to the torch.
I was gonna whine: didn't they just do that? But, I guess its been awhile. The difference last time it cost $62 M. American Express raised $1.7M, one penny per transaction. This time it will be funded by money borrowed fron the assassins of Tianamin Square.
Odd that this story did not mention that the statue was closed from 1984 to 1986 for a major restoration that cost $87 million.

Liberty Island
The base is an 11 point old fort that was on the island
...my Uncle stopped me.
It’s being reshaped to look like Michelle Obama and instead of a torch she will be holding an acorn. And the book she’ll be holding “Rules for Radicals” by Saul Alinsky.
Funny how after trashing our economy, contributing heavily to the continued and increasing unemployment problems, doing all in their power to stop domestic conventional energy production, now, Liberty will be officially shut down.
Hmmmmm...
You can look at it from the outside, but you cannot enter within.
