NEW YORK—American consumers can expect bigger grocery bills in 2012, even as commodity prices are forecast to fall.

In a recent report, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said grocery-store prices will likely rise 3% to 4% in 2012, on par with this year, even though ingredient costs may fall.
The biggest increases would likely be in the first half of next year, but prices would most likely ease later in 2012, said USDA economist Richard Volpe.

They’re killing us with price hikes now. I was at AT&T park today in San Fran watching the Giants get clobbered by the Pirates (at least the weather was gorgeous!). A cup of IPA was up to $9.25! A regular brew (Bud, Coors, Miller) was the same price, but a slightly larger cup. Only last year I think the price was $7.50. Yikes!
It’s Queasy Economics 2, which may soon be followed by Queasy Economics 3 - a system by which the dollar becomes devalued to the point that it will become cheaper to ingest the greenbacks than it will be a Big Mac.
This under the guy who tried to commiserate with voters by talking about the price of arugula at Whole Foods.

FWIW, We do some of our grocery shopping at Walmart because it is the cheapest game in town and I’ve noticed price increases on a variety of items in the 12% to 25% range. Canned veggies, ramen noodles, yogurt, hotdogs, and so on.
I also tend to pay attention to sale prices, and I’ve noticed that advertised sale items don’t go as low as they use to.
I've noticed that, too, plus it seems the kinds of meat advertised are less beef, and more chicken, hot dogs, and fish from China.
At Ranch 99 Asian supermarket, one can’t get some imported stuff any more. It just disappeared from the shelves. In other cases, the packages have gotten smaller. I think the problem is that the exporter is used to exporting one size for all foreign countries, primarily the US. However the US dollar has been shrinking compared to other currencies, and they need to use that trick of making the package smaller to entice consumers to buy their product in the US, but they don’t need that trick in other export countries. So with some products they have just written off the US, at least for the time being.
At Safeway the cost of ground turkey went from something like $5 per pound package to $7.50 per pound package in about 3 months.

Exactly. Prices are not rising by 2-4% at a clip—that would be managable. They are rising by 25-50%.
Indeed, they're already going through the roof. So we can count on 2012 showing even higher prices?

What was 2/$4 two years ago - went to 2/$5 - then 2/$6 to 2/$7 - so 2/$8 is just around the corner.....*sigh-thud*
I’m shopping at a lot of different outlets lately - cheap grocery stores I would never set foot in before - $1dollar stores - closeout stores.

Kraft mayo is over $5! Of course, we only buy it when it’s on sale. Butter is ridiculous and meat prices are gonna force a lot of us to become vegetarians!

This is reminding me of the late 70’s when Kroger was mixing 30% soy meal into their hamburger to keep the ticket price affordable. And we all know what that did for Jimmy Carter’s prospects.
I had never heard that. Isn’t there some kind of law against that?
