Online push for Bert, Ernie to have gay wedding on 'Sesame Street' + FReep Poll

This idea isn't going to make a big splash with Rubber Duckie.

An online campaign to pressure the producers of "Sesame Street" into having lovable roommates Bert and Ernie get married is gathering steam.

Getting hitched would change things for Ernie, who has long sang about how his bath toy, Rubber Duckie, "was the one."

More than 700 people have signed on to the petition, posted at change.org.

"We are not asking that Sesame Street do anything crude or disrespectful," reads the petition for the muppet merger. "It can be done in a tasteful way. Let us teach tolerance of those that are different."

A debate over the sexuality of Sesame Street's most famous duo has dogged the show since Bert and Ernie first appeared in 1969. The puppet pair sleep next to each other and bicker almost as much as a married couple.

But the producers of Sesame Street say Bert and Ernie's relationship is purely platonic.

"Bert and Ernie are best friends," the non-profit Sesame Workshop said in a statement. "They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves.

"Even though the Sesame Street Muppets ... possess many human traits and characteristics, they have no sexual orientation."

Yes, it's a great way to teach young viewers a valuable lesson

No, it would be out of place on a children's TV show

I'm not sure

They have been together for 42 years which is much longer than most couples.

While it's not exactly letting the cat out of the bag that Bert and Ernie were more than just roommates, this is stupid. What daytime cartoon character / stuffed animal children's show host gets married? Straight or gay? If heterosexual marriage, romantic love, or relationships other than 'friendship and family' are themes above your target audience, then gay marriage ... I mean, how ridiculous would that be?

It's almost like 40 year old liberals want to see this as a wierd nostalgic remake to entertain themselves, and get off on shocking kids while they're at it. Which is just bizarre on a lot of levels. This whole thing is so odd I don't even know how to process it.

I have a better idea. Big Bird is obviously the gay one. If they really want to teach kids about homo life, how about having a series of shows where each week he comes down with another disease, gonorrhea, hepatitis, AIDS, anal warts etc.

Sure it’s sick, but no more sick than the other idea they are pushing.

Well gee, they are cartoon character’s~~~so to speak. Not real life.
This is a children's show meant to inspire and teach~~~but sexual matters? Please can we leave some things up to parents to teach their children. And why do gays/or their agenda have to continue to be PUSHED on kids!!!
Can KIDS BE KIDS!!!!!!

I'm not sure 2%

I hope these nuts who advocated this pretend marriage between two puppets learn a valuable lesson from the results of this poll.

Now they are not even trying to hide their indoctrination of children into the homosexual lifestyle—just like in ancient Japan, Greece, and Rome and todays Afghanistan—what’s next?— teaching man/boy love. Pederasty is part of the homosexual culture— no sexual morality. That is why in Germany and the UN they are now in the process of removing all age restrictions for sex. Pedophiles are in control of our government and the UN. Homosexuality is all about destroying Christian morality and the natural family. It is in the Communist playbook—Naked Communist.

It is a learned “lifestyle”. It is caused by child abuse and/or lack of proper role models.

There is NO gay gene—twins studies proved it couldn’t be. Behaviors are habituated and copied and kids learn to love their sexual identity or they are made to loathe it by the environment they are in. If they are molested or traumatized abnormal behaviors are much more likely.

Homosexuality is fluid—said Kinsey—it is all just a lack of sexual morality—allowing your body to be used for self-pleasure only with no regard for anyone else. It is about lust, selfishness and self-loathing.

I think that if anyone learned anything in a discussion related to two male hand puppets contemplating holy matrimony, then the world is a much dumber place than I gave it credit for.

This whole topic is the intellectual equivalent of spray painting the inside of a plastic bag and then sniffing the fumes.

“Well gee, they are cartoon character’s~~~so to speak. Not real life.”

Ok, thanks for filling me in on that information.

From what I have read, I don’t think Bert & Ernie are really getting married.

And while their sexual orientation has been rather suspect for the last 42 years, I doubt that anyone has become gay or will become gay due to watching them on Sesame Street.

Well, Miss Piggy and Kermit did have a movie where it was implied the marriage was real.

But this is ridiculous. They just want to co-opt generational characters as candidates for gay marriage because no one would care about some newly introduced characters married off. Next target will be re-making the Odd Couple just so they can have a gay union. Then Laverne and Shirley will reunite for a lesbian union. Let’s just ruin every platonic relationship that has ever existed and teach the example no relationship can be devoid of sexual undertones.

I am so sick of pedophiles pretending they have rights to destroy the most innocent. It’s as if all the defrocked catholic Priests went into politics.

Good point about Big Bird. I’ve always suspected Peppermint Patty too.

Sesame Street should have a gay wedding between 0bama and Larry Sinclair.

After that, the gay lovers can officially convert to islam.

The Sesame Street people have yet one more time denied there is any sexuality to the characters. They’re cloth and foam rubber.

(Sex-wise Miss Piggy and Janice don’t count, nor Gonzo and his chicken-harem. There is no Sesame Street/Piggy crossover).

Whoever the joker is who made up the Facebook page, he sure judged your response well. Hysterics all across the internet up in arms over a single Facebook page speaking to something that isn’t happening.

Show your outrage. Moan over the collapse of civilization. Give him his moneys worth.

btw Ernie is still evil of course. Just not gay.

We were always told it was crazy to say Bert and Ernie were depicting homosexuals.

I hope those people now feel like dopes.

Possibly, but each of them has had someone's hand up their ass for decades.

Our friggin nation is crumbling around us as we speak and this is the best thing out on the net? I could give a rat’s turd less about what amount to two phucking socket puppet having a Gay Wedding on a fictional kiddies program! At the current rate there would even be an America for our children if we don’t turn this around in 2012.

Well the ‘gay community’ has tried to turn the “My Little Pony” character “Rainbow Dash” into a lesbian.

Show creators do not endorse it at all, nor does the show imply it, but the push is on for ‘official recognition’. The militant gays want to homofy everything they can just to force mainstream acceptance.

And that’s just one of many kid shows that push applies to.

Kids don’t watch Sesame Street anymore.

The magic is long gone.

The brilliance of the Sesame Street of the 70s and 80s has been gradually replaced by boring, long-form, repetitive computer-animated sequences, and is dominated almost entirely by Elmo, the speech-impaired laughing-gas addict who has to learn the same basic lessons over and over again whilst flirting with the almost impossibly gay-acting, retarded “Mister Noodles” and incessantly referring to himself in the third person.

In any case, my three-year old hates it, and lots of other kids do too.

It used to be fun even for adults to watch! Now it’s just gross.

Sadly only a few of the old episodes are available on DVD.
