Religious Left Stews Over Debt Deal

Posted By Mark D. Tooley

On August 5, 2011 @ 12:27 am

The Religious Left is displeased over the debt deal between President Obama and Congress for unforgivably omitting tax increases. They are also peeved over limits, if not outright cuts, to the growth of their beloved welfare, regulatory and entitlement state, which for the Religious Left is the virtual Kingdom of God on Earth.

Some religious leftists were more incendiary than others. Emergent Church guru Brian McLaren, champion of religious postmodernism, typically rejects moral absolutes — except when denouncing conservatives. “A zealot faction in our own US Congress threatens to damage our economy in ways that terrorists never could, reinforcing the old adage that ‘we have found the enemy and he is us,’” he bewailed, falling just short of comparing Tea Partiers to al-Qaeda.

In his angst over the budget deal, McLaren bemoaned all the Left’s favorite bugaboos in a long litany that surely left him breathless:

[T]he unsustainability…of our extractive, fossil-fuel-based, corporatist-militarist economy, or our indefensible, irresponsible, nearly unbelievable failure to address energy policy and climate change, or the absurd scapegoating of Muslim folks and gay folks while reality makes clear how our own political elite can bring us to the brink of default without any outside help, like a slow-motion car crash in full view of the whole world.

More temperate was an official of the Presbyterian Church (USA) lobby office, who admitted to fellow leftist religious activists: “The failures of this bill outweigh the successes.” She was addressing a seminar of the Interreligious Working Group on Domestic Human Needs (DHN) on August 3. (Read my associate Jeff Walton’s report.)

I believe the Religious Left is tax exempt... When they begin to pay taxes, I might give a shiite what they think.

They want to raise taxes, so as usual the emphasis is more on the ‘left’ and less on the ‘religious.’

The left simply believes your stuff is their stuff.

Or to put it more simply, they are thieves with a cause.

It’s the ends justify the means crowd, the kind of people who produce the Stalin’s, Mao’s and Hitler’s of the world all in the name of the greater good.

Those who have faith do not refer to it as “religion”, we call it faith. Religiousity is a negative. A spirit of religion means we do things to show our fellow man we have God in mind. Salvation requires God in one’s heart.

There is a religious Left? Who knew?

The difference from the the religious left and traditional Christianity is that that the religion of the left is a founded on the doctrines of mankind, not God.

Good point. I believe that “housing allowances” are exempt for priests, pastors and rabbis. So, the next time you see a compensation package for your religious leader structured so that an oddly large part or even the majority of their income is allocated to “housing allowance”, you will know that their clarion calls for more social programs, more government spending, more endless liberalism don’t affect them because they ain’t paying the taxes for it, and you are.

Yep - and they also want the government to extract more money from real tax-payers to pay their tithes. They know the tithes should be paid, but they don't want to do it for themselves. They also think that charity drives are what other churches do in order to support them.

I am not so smart, but I am getting older and with age comes a certain wisdom that comes from experience.

In my experience I have noticed that a raise in tax’s never lowers the debt. IOt just gives government more money to spend on people who do nothing to earn that money.

Raised tax’s buys entitlements and never-—never in my lifetime has lowered the National debt.

If you give more money to Government , they will merely throw it away.

Of course for the religious left this appears to be what they want.

Tax me to pay for their vote.

This reads just like the lefty-progs' letters to the editor and on-line comments in the local paper. When the approved message gets out there, they certainly pound their "points".

There has been two words, Safety Net, which have been batted around for a number of years by both the left and right. Those words have left me wondering what was meant by those who spoke these words; The Safety Net should not be removed, for if the Safety Net is removed there will be repercussions detrimental to America. My thoughts were there is no such thing as an actual Safety Net. There is only the illusion of a Safety Net. Once the illusion fades, those unprepared lose their illusion of safety in a net (think of a netted fish), as something called desperation fills the void. Think I'll have another cup of coffee; my Safety Net.

The words “religious” and “left” put together make an oxymoron.

the religious left is mostly false.
just like the “Catholic” groups that support abortion.

the hypocrasy about Muslims and gays shows that.

the left condemns real Christians, for following the Bible about gay marriage,
yet they never criticise Islam for literally killing gays.

(Sharia law is crystal clear that gays should be killed.
the only debate is over the method...)
