Who was the brainiac officer who put such a large group of elite troops on one helicopter?

Shades of the Carter Iran rescue fiasco.

I thought SEALs traveled in smaller units to avoid this very scenario?

this is not unusual to have that many men on one aircraft, you can fit 50 Marines on a CH-53

Exactly my thoughts...the Chinook is a flying coffin and it should only transport large number of troops around safe areas or behind enemy lines, for a mission like this they should’ve been transported in smaller units. Someone dropped the ball on this.
