U.S. Special Forces Killed as Taliban Shoots Down Helicopter
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 08/06/11

A NATO helicopter was shot down in the eastern province of Afghanistan last night, killing 31 U.S. special forces and seven Afghan soldiers.

The aircraft, belonging to NATO's International Security Assistance Force, or ISAF, went down in the Maidan Wardak province, according to a statement from the office of Afghan President Hamid Karzai. The helicopter was completely destroyed, shot down by the Taliban, Shahidullah Shahid, a spokesman for the Maidan Wardak province said in a phone interview.

The incident marks the biggest single loss of life for U.S. forces in Afghanistan since operations began in 2001, Associated Press reported. Establishing the type of weapon used is key to gauging whether a new and more sophisticated threat has emerged in Afghanistan, Mark Pritchard, a U.K. Member of Parliament and vice-chairman of the Conservative Parliamentary Defence Committee, said by phone.

Is it just me ...

I mean am I the only one who thinks we are not being brutal enough with our enemies?

There are others out here.

In addition to greater force, the definition of innocence should be revised. Those who aid and abet should be included

Deliberate attrition.

31 special forces on one match? That’s just not a good idea. It reminds me of when we lost a helicopter full of SEALs a few years ago. No way should we be providing the enemy such a juicy target.

Prayers for the families.

Me, too. Where were the weapons that were used for this stored? Was it one if the many mosques or other off limits locations prescribed by the Illegal’s suicidal ROE? This incident screams out for a full Congressional investigation of the ROE and how they are getting courageous, honorable service people murdered by our enemies. Of course, maybe the murder of our best service people has been the Illegal’s plan all along.

I lost some great brother in arms! This is Carter on steroids (operation blue light) since the scuttlebutt is the “hands-off policy” of zero is behind the shooting down of the shithook C-47!

Pray for my Brothers!

No, it's not just you. The only time I ever admired a democrate was Harry Truman when he nuked Japan and ended the war. We have become a country of surrender since then.

The Chinook is great for transporting a large number of troops but in this case wouldn’t it had been safer to have used a few smaller and possibly stealth choppers like the one the Seals used to take out bin laden? A drone could be used ahead of the choppers to not only spot potential enemies but take fire from below as a distraction from the Seals choppers. Just thinking.

I agree 82. First, why are we loading all the SEALS into one crappy Chinook? Second, if this operation was under NATO command, we should withdraw from that agreement. Third, Bring in the B1B and lay waste to the entire valley.

My sister just called me and said that she heard on TV (didn’t say which channel) that it was Seal Team 6...anybody else heard that, or is it a rumor.

First and foremost, you never land on a [hot] LZ! the LZ is prepped to lay waste to any terrorist who may be waiting for you to show up and then shoot you!

Zero's policy: you can't shoot unless you see a rifle and only in self defense. This is nonsense!

This allowed the shithook to come in without first prepping the LZ and a terrorist was allowed to fire an RPG-7V and brought down the chopper with more than 31 personnel!

This lesson was learned years ago in nam! Zero continues to micromanage this war from Washington, just like Carter that ended up killing many young Americans in the desert as well!
