Retiring the World’s Policeman

President Obama and his Tea Party rivals find themselves on the same side of defense cuts. This is bad news for the country.

If the so-called “super-committee” created by the deal to raise the debt limit does not reach agreement on future spending cuts, it would trigger automatic cuts of $1.2 trillion divided evenly between domestic programs and defense. In other words, the Pentagon could have to cough up $600 billion over the coming decade. As The Washington Post reports, “To put that $600 billion in perspective, it’s worth noting that the federal government was already looking at reducing projected spending on national security by about $400 billion over the next 12 years.”

Oddly, President Obama and his Tea Party rivals find themselves on the same side of this issue. After all, many Tea Party types, focused on the worthwhile goal of shrinking the size of the federal government, seem comfortable with balancing the budget on the back of the military.

There will be consequences to this military retrenchment. In fact, we are already seeing glimpses of an America more interested in “nation-building here at home,” as the president describes it, than in fulfilling the global role it has played since World War II.

In one of his last addresses as defense secretary, Robert Gates worried about this very possibility. “If we are going to reduce the resources and the size of the U.S. military,” he said, “people need to make conscious choices about what the implications are for the security of the country, as well as for the variety of military operations we have around the world, if lower priority missions are scaled back or eliminated … The tough choices ahead are really about the kind of role the American people—accustomed to unquestioned military dominance for the past two decades—want their country to play in the world.”

Is the Tea Party ready to share credit (or blame) with Ubama for diminishing America's stance in the world and compromising national security??

National security? Are you joking? Have ya seen America's borders next to one of the most corrupt countries on the planet, where Mexican officials can be bribed with cheap beer and skanky $20. prostitutes?

Come on.

A reduction of $1.2 Trillion in “future” spending cuts is a reduction in the INCREASE of, what, $7.0 Trillion? As we butcher the language in the hopes of deceiving most, we also violate every other accounting convention because nobody except government uses baseline budgeting. Unless “cuts” equal more than 8% of our national budget, how do we have a real cut?

As evidenced by yet another wing-nut, the answer for him is yes.

Hegemony will take place on this planet, with or without us.

Perhaps China would make a better policeman on the block. Some folks sure seem to think so.

“Bring the troops home. Do away with our Navy. Kill all the aircraft orders and mothball what we have. No problem. It’s our brave new world where everything is peachy, if only the U.S. would quit screwing things up.”

And the reaction to the next 09/11, why say nice things about our enemies and expect them to love us. All will be right with the world. Honest!

Of course they’re not, but you wouldn’t know it by what some folks around here push. Honest to goodness, it’s as if D.U. dumps it wing-nuts on our forum every time this issue comes up.

The idiot that wrote this is just that an idiot, we have spent hundreds and hundreds of billions on the military, a very large hunk of which was nothing more than cronyism waste. Just cut out the damn waste,

I assume you’re calling me a DU wing-nut, when you should know better.

Facts are uncomfortable things sometimes, when they don’t fit a template. Tea Party Patriots leader Mark Meckler has been calling for defense cuts in the budget since January**. None other than Senator Tom Coburn*** proposed $1 trillion in defense cuts. And so on. You should well know there is a strong Ron Paul libertarian influence in the Tea Party as well, and they are dead set against military spending, period.

Assume away...

You would be wrong, but you have a right to be wrong.

I don’t care who calls for it, I disagree. Ted Kennedy spent his whole life calling for it.

You get one chance when it comes to defense. You miss that chance and your nation becomes something children read about in history books and little else.

This is one issue where I find it very interesting the groups that become fellow travelers.

If the so-called “super-committee” does not reach agreement on future spending cuts, it would trigger automatic cuts of $1.2 trillion divided between domestic programs and defense......the Pentagon could have to cough up $600 billion over the coming decade.

THE WAR PROFITEERING MACHINE "Officially" it costs the US $120 billion a year to finance our military presence in Afghanistan and all the other related functions to keep "our friend" Hamid Karzai in power. Probably the figure is higher, much higher ...lots of CIA and other covert funds don’t get reported........$150 billion is probably far too low. Think trillions.

Karzai was pulled out of obscurity some years ago, thought to be an Afghan hack who could be manipulated. Prodded by the duplicitous neocons with hidden agendas, the US government orchestrated Karzai into a world-recognized power. And ever since US taxpayers, and our military, have been paying the price.

Heck, the US taxpayer got to subsidize one of the three most corrupt governments on the face of the Earth. The Karzai Klan is stealing billions---and were actually seen shamelessly loading billions on trucks to transport out of their godforsaken country...so that they could enjoy life far, far away from that hellhole.

US taxpayers have enriched Hamid, his corrupt brother (now dead), the rest of the crooked Karzai Klan and countless members of their extended family..........a nauseating assortment of cut throats, drug traffickers, embezzlers, money launderers, extortionists, thieves.....

One of the biggest scams is located at the Bank of Kabul where the definition of a “loan” for the well-connected is "all the money you can take with no intention of ever paying it back." So far, the known bank “losses” are something like a billion dollars PLUS......."withdrawn" from US money deposited there by the military, the CIA, the State Dept. and all the other US agencies that were duped into financing this colossal foreign policy failure.

Of course....the war-profiteering neocons got their cut. Neocon Richard Perle is starting an oil business in the Mideast. And if he ever dares sells even one barrel of oil, he should be charged with treason.

Network news reported the US pulling out of Afghanistan depends on our training Afghan troops to takeover---something we have been doing for years there...... and in Iraq......at a cost of trillions.

The US takes raw recruits off the farm sends them to US boot camp, and in three weeks they are battle-ready.

How stupid are these Mideasters? Will they never learn to be soldiers?

Hah---I answer my own question. They are wily like a fox---knowing that as long as they keep the US in their hellholes, the money keeps rolling in.

Besides the Neocons and their 'WAR PROFITEERING MACHINE' with leeches like that slimy Richard Perle lining their pockets. There was that fat ass Dem congressmen and 'ex-Marine', JACK MURTHA. The dope from Pennsylvania steered millions and millions to his tiny district each year with earmarks for "Defense Spending" -- aka: Useless and Wasteful Pork.

And Murtha wasn't and isn't alone with wasteful "Defense Spending" earmarks. Joe Lieberman earmarks million and millions each year to the Navy Sub Base in New London, (Groton) Connecticut. Which was found to be unnecessary and should be closed. Joe's fought like hell over the years to keep it open. That's just pure and simple Vote Buying. (When Dems fight and earmark millions for defense it's nothing but bribery to the sheeple).

And the list of Congressman who earmark money for useless "Defense Spending" is a loooooong one. If they have one company in their district that makes a single part for anything "military" they're throwing our money at it.

As proof that this "Defense Spending" is wasteful is when the DOD tells Congress they don't WANT or NEED, what Congress was mandating it have, all built by said spending earmarks.

So yes. "Defense" can be cut. It's just a matter of where, for who, and on what.

And one boondoggle is that 'Joint Strike Fighter', the F-35. The dam thing is so expensive to build they won't be able to afford to use it in case it gets damaged or worse, shot down or just crashes (the F-35 is the military version of the 'committee who set out to design a Horse and came up with a Camel').

Murtha was the loudmouth jackass who found the 'Haditha Marines' Guilty of Murder on national TV before the Marines even had lawyers.

Dont EVER mention LIEberman's name in my presence. He got into the Congress due to lies, lies, lies.

=========================================

HERE'S HOW LIBERMAN LIED HIMSELF INTO OFFICE Lieberman is a staunch supporter of abortion rights, and even voted six times in a row AGAINST banning the savagery of partial-birth abortion.

But pro-life leaders in Connecticut remember another Joe......candidate Lieberman. Lieberman made pro-life pledges about 20 years ago, when he was first a candidate for the US Senate. Lieberman sought pro-life votes in the final stretch of his 1988 Democratic bid to oust 18-year Sen. Lowell Weicker, a pro-abort Republican.

"Joe was very liberal, like Weicker, but we had a poll on abortion that showed which way the wind was blowing," says Daniel Cosgrove, then the Democratic town chairman in Branford, Mr. Lieberman's hometown. The poll showed anti-abortion sentiment outweighed pro-choice views in urban areas throughout Connecticut. "In the Waterbury area, it was more than any, 12,000 [more] against abortion," Mr. Cosgrove says.

Lieberman "expressed himself as coming from a tradition in support of life, not in favor of abortion on demand." "Lieberman expressed himself against abortion, all suicide, and euthanasia. His position on that definitely was well received by the Catholic hierarchy.

State Sen. Regina Smith, who conducted the pro-life poll for the archdiocese, arranged for Lieberman, then the state AG, to meet with Catholic prelates before the election to lay out his support for Catholic pro-life positions.

The strategy worked. Lieberman convinced the archbishop he favored pro-life positions and would vote differently than Mr. Weicker, thus winning Catholic support that pushed him to a narrow 10,000-vote victory — the only Democratic Senate upset of that year. Lieberman's winning margin was less than 1 percent of 1.4 million votes.

Written records of a meeting between Lieberman and top officials of the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) two months after the 1988 election quote Mr. Lieberman as saying he "thinks there are too many abortions," and promising he would not "apply a litmus test" against pro-life judicial nominees.

Liar Lieberman today, of course, denies any of this ever happened.

An Orthodox Jew, Lieberman defends his pro-abortion, pro-infanticide record, saying Jewish law is deeply divided and Orthodox Jewry construes abortion as "a personal matter."

During Clinton’s impeachment, this so-called "conscience of the Senate" went on and on condemning Clinton's behavior, but when the crucial vote came, he stood by Clinton.

Lieberman is always plotting to get something for himself. Who can forget when Dem Lieberman sucked up to McCain at the same time he wrote a huge check to Dems to keep his bona fides.

GAGARAMA The lowest point in US politics was when his adoring wife referred to Gore's VP running mate as "My Joey."'
