One Rapid City police officer is dead and two others wounded after a routine stop turned deadly.
James Ryan McCandless, 28, a six-year veteran of the department, was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Nick Armstrong, 27, underwent surgery and remains in critical condition. A third officer, whose name was not immediately released pending notification of his next of kin, was shot in the face and is stable.

In any event, if it's an Indian suspect, the reservations nowadays can be a little scary, as some of them have basically declared war on law enforcement. In some cases, they need to go in with multiple car loads of LEO's, just to serve a warrant.

First officer KIA in Rapid since 1985. That says a lot about Rapid City.
Prayers for the family.
***A Native American male in his 20s is the suspected shooter.***
For some strange reason I felt it was a “Native American”. Maybe it is because I remember the happenings near there back in 1973 and 1974.
This tragedy happened right in front of the home of one of our employees. He is a retired policeman himself, and is still pretty shaken by how it went down. Poor officer didn’t stand a chance.....shot at point blank range while he was questioning the “native American”.
By all accounts, McCandless was a rather extraordinary young man. He recently received his Master’s Degree while working for the PD at night. He also was a part-time instructor at the University here in Rapid. He was a familiar face around town because he did a lot of public service announcements for the PD and also a lot of benefit work for different organizations.
Such a senseless waste. He will be missed.
