Does Porn ‘Rewire the Brain’?
Wall Street Journal ^ | 7/5/11 | Christopher Shea

Naomi Wolf argues, in a CNN article, that pornography is “rewiring the male brain” and “causing [men] to have more difficulty controlling their impulses.”

Moreover, she says that watching pornography triggers the same dopamine releases in the brain caused by illicit-drug use, and that this sets off a corresponding spiral in which the user must have more of the stimulant, more often, to get the same enjoyment. This has spillover effects in the real world, as the men lose interest in their human romantic partners—or demand that the women reproduce the extreme behavior the men see on their TVs or computer monitors.

Some deny this, but seems to me the concept of consumption of any material would alter one's mind as to what kind of behavior one desires.

I know Naomi Wolf isn't the most conservative woman in the world (wasn't she the one who advised Al Gore to wear earth tones?), but this assertion seems to make sense.

I'll post another thread to Naomi's original article. Is Pornography Driving Men Crazy?

Pornography treats people as mere objects to be used for our own selfish gratification. Pornography also destroys the meaning of true love. The Bible is clear: “But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity” (Ephesians 5:3).

Never forget that what goes on in our minds eventually influences the way we act. Jesus warned, “I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart”
(Matthew 5:28).

Make it your goal to keep your mind pure, as well as your
body.

Plausible. Television and internet use surely changes the way we thing, perhaps even physiologically. Stroke victims heal by a kind of “rewiring.”

Ahm, Naomi, you simple minded sexist twit, if pornography rewired the male brain, then why would a "male" watch it in the first place?

Let me guess, a born with compulsion for a wanton rewiring, right?

There could be some behavioral effect, but I’m not convinced by what is presented here.

On the other hand, there is clear evidence of a new trend of female teachers having relationships with male students, yet I’ve never heard anyone allege that female brains are somehow being “rewired”.

In contradiction to claims often made by others (not in this article) there could be a correlation with reduced rates of sexual assault (by men) with the rise of the internet:

“Sexual assault has fallen by more than 60% in recent years.2 Had the 1993 rate held steady, 6.8 million Americans would have been assaulted in the last 13 years.

If women knew what we are thinking they'd slap us silly. They have no idea.

PS: I'm just not into porn, never have been.

I observe all these things in women also. Humans are hard wired for sex. Otherwise, none of us would be here.

Just more pop psychology drivel from the usual leftist source.

The reasoning is that if no one can be held accountable because of their biological predilections, then everything goes ... which is just what the left has been fighting for for the last fifty years; if it feels good, do it.

Forget that man is supposed to be a civilized, rational being; in the leftist world, the law of the jungle trumps all.

Didn’t they start getting really strict with sex offenders and registering them in the 90s?

Sad to see a couple with a porn user, ususally male in the fam. Guy usually has an attractive wife but wont touch her. Rather masturbate to pictures than love with his little wife.

The women are devistated, and the men are compulsive.

Heartbreaking.

Takes a lot of work to change that marriage.

I thought men were pre-wired for procreation and hunting and gathering.

That’s what women been accusing us of for years. And now they have concerns?
