Pelosi: GOP Connecting Debt Limit to Reducing Deficit ‘Appalling’

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said that House Republicans should not be connecting an increase to the debt limit to reducing the nation’s current $1.5 trillion deficit.

“Over 30 times we have lifted the debt ceiling since President Reagan was president. Over 30 times, not one time did we subject a president to this burden of saying you can’t – we won’t lift it unless we reduce the deficit,” said Pelosi on Wednesday at a Capitol Hill press conference celebrating the 46th anniversary of Medicare being signed into law.

“Of course we will reduce the deficit but it should not be connected and the idea that we could jeopardize whether they’re sending out social security checks or military checks or that our credit rating would be affected by this is appalling but I commend Senator Reid for trying to find a path. I commend the president for his patience, for his respect, for every view on democratic or republican view, giving it time, consideration, trying to make it work. I wish the same respect for his time was and the responsibility that we all have was there.”

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me thirty times, it's time to start over! In her (weakened?) mind, having repeated the mistake has become the justification for repeating the mistake.

The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. … Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that “the buck stops here.” Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better. - Senator Barack Obama on the 2006 debt ceiling increase.

Earlier in our nation's history the idea of passing legislation that required expenditures without providing the source of revenue which shall fund those expenditures was rarely considered.

I think that would be the balanced budget amendment. What ever happened to "pay as you go" legislation anyway?

Hey Nance, isn’t responsibility a bitch? You are a blithering idiot. What, pray tell, does that say for your voting constituency?

Those stupid tea partiers have it backwards. If we INCREASE the debt ceiling then we can INCREASE the deficit. Basic Democrat math skills tells us that, so stop talking about deficit reductions.

Isn’t it funny how anything that smacks of reducing spending is appalling to her ilk? They fight violently against anybody restricting their credit card. Vote Republican!

THANK YOU (you evil communist) Pelosi (bitch).

This needs hammered home; over and over and over. I see what she is trying to do stopping the buck at Reagan, but it won't work. I actually think they're losing more of their base than we know invoking more Reagan lately.
D.C. has been doing business as usual at a count of 30 times so far. It would probably be more if the Dem's did not stall the budget for the last 820+ days, but I digress.

Washington is reckless and it is THEY who are killing this Republic; BOTH Parties and a current day Congressman's worst nightmare is here; an awoken Republic.

Long Live TEA.

Perhaps Nancy would like to explain how we are in a better financial position now, then we were in when we significantly raised the debt ceiling in 2006 ?

What specific problems did raising the debt ceiling in 2006 actually solve ?

Also, why did Nancy vote against raising the debt ceiling in 2006 ?

House Vote on Conference Report: H. Con. Res. 95 [109th]: Budget resolution FY2006

hyp·o·crite –noun
1.a person who pretends to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc., that he or she does not actually possess, especially a person whose actions belie stated beliefs.
