Gov. Rick Scott took his armchair president skills to CNN this morning as part of his belief that he has a say in federal government, and the CNN anchors made him look like a fool -- again.
In early June, the governor went on CNN to defend his advocacy of drug-testing welfare recipients. He was asked three times what evidence he had that those on welfare have a higher rate on drug use -- one time he said, "I don't know," another time he didn't answer, and the third time he invented a scientific study on drug use.
This time around, Christine Romans, one of the hosts of CNN's American Morning, listened to Scott's argument against raising the debt ceiling, and her response was that the governor's opinion "runs counter to what just about everyone from both parties," and against what she's heard from every financial expert.
Romans asked the governor why he believed that raising the debt ceiling wouldn't affect the economy or the states -- which he admitted just the other day he wasn't really sure about that ...

Ali Velshi is CNN’s main show on Finance, yet he said last year he has CREDIT CARD DEBT!!!!!!! What an IDIOT.
There really is no substitute for lack of preparation.
This author is a moron
CNN asks stupid questions and answers there own questions with made-up ‘facts’ and this author reports it as big news?
it is to barf...
Good grief...really...can we do better at this?
I am so damn sick of 51% of the people that PAY NO FEDERAL INCOME TAX and a ton of them get MONEY BACK FROM US!!! ENOUGH BLOOD SUCKING!!!
If we had universities worthy of the name, there would be ample studies already out there, proving the highly-intuitive proposition. Maybe there are such studies, but if the FL guv doesn’t know about them, even after being glacked with the question, twice, then maybe there aren’t.
But it IS intuitive: people on welfare are using drugs because they can (since they don’t have to hold down a job or pass drug tests); secondly, people who ARE on drugs already can’t make a living, so they gravitate to welfare.
I don’t know how hard it could possibly be to prove that proposition.
Anyway, it is a reasonable suspicion — and that’s usually grounds for further investigation.
But as to the governor — if he is not prepared, he should not go anywhere near a communist news organization. Go Christie or go home.
Shame on Rick Scott. He had to know that there was going to be an ambush.
I guess this speaks to how sick we Floridians were of slick metrosexuals and RINOs like Charlie Crist and his Master. Because by any measure the left got creamed in 2010. And guess what, the entitled government employees have started to contribute for their benefits. But, yeah, he's just a stupid yokel.
Well, gee, Christine, where do you go when you need a refill for your crack pipe? Do you cruise the boulevards of the Hamptons looking for dope dealers on every corner, or do you get your dumbbroad ass to the hood, the ghetto, where da homeboyz be?
” The Gov. doesn’t NEED any proof WELFARE people do more drugs....they get OUR MONEY!!! That’s enough of a reason to drug-test them...” <<<<<
Hey, bingo there! Workers are drug tested for jobs for crying out loud and randomly in their jobs! It’s hardly too much to ask for those chronically nursing the government teat. 100% of Americans are now humiliated (or should be) who board any flight whether its 45 minutes or cross country. There is nothing wrong with Scott’s proposal and a real deer in headlights shouldn’t really have to explain it.
Notice they’re at Borders. No wonder it went belly up.
Taking taxpayer funded handouts should not be comfortable.

I can propose a case study of the Peace Street Apartments in Salem, Oregon, where I lived for several years in the early and middle 1990s. Practically all of my neighbors were on some form of public assistance, with the exception of myself and some others. In addition to simple observation, my longevity at the location allowed me to ask about the connection between drug use and welfare payments among the recipients themselves.
All of the welfare recipients used some kind of drugs, mostly alcohol and marijuana, with a smattering of crack cocaine, heroin, and pharmaceuticals. Some were recreational users; some were addicts. All had ways of converting welfare payments into drug money. For instance, people could trade food stamps for marijuana (this was back in the day when food stamps came in a booklet). There was an alcoholic at the end of our apartment block who referred to his welfare as “my paycheck.”
You’re right about the lack of social science research in this area. I had my own experiences, and I suppose if I had been motivated I could have turned it into what they call “action research.” However, my motivation was to get the hell out of there as fast I could.
I agree with the posts here connecting taxpayer money to drug tests. It’s actually far worse than you think.
In states with redemptions/returables for bottled water paid for with welfare EDT cards etc; collectively go out back and dump out the water and return for cash.
EBT card: buys select lobsters, sea scallops and other goodies.... [Listen to Audio story @ Howie Carr Thu, 12 May 2011]
Seems to me that the drug testing would provide the evidence one way or another whether they have a higher instance of drug use. To deny the gathering of evidence because there is no current evidence is stupid.
