Fully automatic Russian military AK-47s can be bought for around $100-200 in South and Central America, or from Venezuela. These much cheaper military grade machine guns can be brought into Mexico with already existing drug shipments with little to no risk so I don't see the value to the Drug Cartels in buying inferior, non military grade semi automatic weapons for over $1000 which 5-10 times the $100-200 going price for high quality, military grade fully auto machine guns.
It is also a much higher risk to traffic these price inflated, inferior quality semi auto AKs across the highly patrolled US - Mexico when the cheaper high quality machine guns can be shipped across the same borders the drugs are going through with little or no risk what so ever.
A lot of the circumstances of Fast and Furious simply do not make any logical sense when put into reasonable context.
It kind of makes you wonder what the heck really was going on with this program and why.

I fundamentally agree with your theory, but with some differences.
I think Glenn left Fox to have TOTAL control of his broadcast, and IMHO he will pick up right where he left off, pointing fingers and naming names.

Just to add a fine point: I’ve been trying to find out if the actual, regular, gun dealers had written immunity to participate in this farce. If they didn’t then they are either nuts or not real dealers but fake ATF storefronts, which has happened before. But written immunity could not have come from a local ATF agent or office-—not even from the FBI. To be binding it would have to be signed by the US Attorney General -—or higher. And who put in the CCTV? If there was no advance immunity then these dealers are also in big trouble-—A dealer accepting a known false 4473 would be just as sickeagle as anything the individual fed agents did.——FWIW the fine is a quarter million$ and ten years.

It only makes sense if there are subsidies involved, unless there is coordination between the Cartels and the people pulling the strings in the US Government.
It hit its peak in 2010/early 2011 and has been trailing off substantially in the last few months.
The violence really ramped up after the Democrats took over on January 2009 and Fast and Furious went into action and the Democrats started pushing a PR offensive for more gun control to “ stop the smuggling of US border state purchased guns which are fueling the violence in Mexico”
The violence in Mexico seems to have ramped down noticeably since the new Republicans were sworn into office and especially since Issa began investigations regarding Fast and Furious and the disclosures regarding US Government involvement in the funding and trafficking of of weapons across the border to Mexico started a few months ago.
There is still violence, of course, but things seem to be deescalating as of late and much of the bold wild wild west hyper violence and the simply inexplicable and senseless atrocities seem to be on the decline. The decline is very recent but there does seem to be a trend developing

This is what happens when ONLY the alternative media pursues a scandal. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, this is the problem we face when the MSM chooses to not be involved. Granted, CBS broke it in the MSM and FOX has talked about it, but they've both just nibbled at the edges. As good as the work of Codrea and Vanderboeh has been, the fact of the matter is that they can not bring the same formidable resources to bear in this investigation that the MSM is capable of doing. Politicians see little to no benefit in even discussing it if it won't give them face time on ABCNNBCBS. Just as with “certifigate”, we are starting to see a lot of loose ends that are just left dangling....Honduras, Columbia county, FBI and DEA informants, CIA, State Dept. etc. So many tangents make the story difficult to explain in a four minute segment so it goes unreported......and a story that's unreported goes nowhere.....especially with politicians.
The Feds, namely the DOJ, ATF, and FBI, are near always silent when they FAIL! Give it a day or two to make up some lying BS, kkthx. =.=

This could very well explain why so many consistent conservative media outlets and commentators have turned silent on so many issues. Look at what has been happening in Mexico, so many deaths meant to send a message, and not just to Mexicans...?
