WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) Manufacturers in the New York region said business activity had weakened slightly in early July, according to a report released Friday by the New York Federal Reserve Bank.
The Empire State index remained below zero for the second straight month, rising only to negative 3.8 in July from negative 7.8 in June.
The index has fallen dramatically the past three months after hitting a 12-month high of 21.7 in April.
Readings below zero indicate more firms said business was worsening than said it was improving.

I didn’t think we had any manufacturing jobs left? They all went to china for cheaper labor. LOL
I am amazed that anyone can do business in the democrat party controlled New York or California.
God bless anyone surviving under this type of massive anti-business attack, especially combined with the Obama War on Capitalism.
I think each and every one of us should go out and purchase a Henry rifle some time in the next 3 months.
We will simultaneously help New York improve their ‘manufacturing index’ AND exercise our 2nd Amendment Rights at the same time.
I know I'm willing to do my part!
I would contend that, if an accurate long-term trend could be studied, manufacturing will be found to have weakened in New York state every of the last 40 or 45 Julys, all the way back to the Rockefeller/Nixon/Ford middle Seventies. I grew up and still live close enough to the “York State” border to get Binghamton TV channels, can’t remember much of any helpful or hopeful economic news out of New York’s Twin Tiers’ Triple Cities, ever. There was a bit of an IBM PC-related boom and bust, and an AlGore/Corning fiber optic communication surge and sucking sound, but where are IBM and Corning now? Even today, with northeast Pennsylvania all apey over Marcellus shale gas, New York’s banning, restricting and debating any gas exploration.
There’s McIntosh.
New York is mostly Democrat.
Democrats are anti-business.
They make anti-business laws.
Less business would be the logical conclusion.
