Obama Asks Rick Perry to Commute Mexican National's Death Sentence
Christian Post Reporter ^ | 7/6/11 | Stephanie Samuel

President Barack Obama and world agencies are pressuring Texas Governor Rick Perry, a conservative and death penalty supporter, to commute the scheduled Thursday execution of Mexican national Humberto Leal Garcia Jr. in the interest of international relations.

...Obama officials are urging Perry to change Garcia's sentence to life imprisonment rather than execution.

The United Nations and Amnesty International have also requested that the sentence be commuted to life.

During Garcia's trial, he was represented by a court-appointed attorney. Through consular assistance, Garcia could have been represented by an attorney provided by the Mexican consulate in the U.S.

Absolute proof that Obama is dishonest, incompetent, or both, and I am prepared to believe "both."

The purported problem is that the U.S. did not honor its obligations under the Vienna Convention. Commutation of the murderer's sentence to life without parole will not change this fact. If we did indeed violate the Vienna Convention, the proper course of action is to stay this individual's execution to give time for Mexican-appointed counsel to file whatever appeals (expedited to prevent the process from dragging out for years) it wants and then, if said appeals are unsuccessful, go ahead with the execution.

The fact that Barry asked the sentence to be commuted instead proves him incompetent, dishonest, and probably both.

As I understand it, the governor of Texas does not have the authority to unilaterally commute this POS’s sentence. And I would hope Perry would refuse if he did have the authority.

Nothing could be more satisfying than telling Obama to go pound sand.

This action is intended to put Perry on the political hot seat and make him radioactive as a Presidential candidate. This is dirty politics intended to benefit Obama by taking out a potential opponent.

Do criminal defendants get court appointed counsel in Mexico? That would surprise me.

Perry should just hung up the phone when Odumbo calls. Drink 2 cold beers after the execution and call obama back and say...

“You called, Mr. president?”

That would be hard to do considering that the Supreme Court refused to stay the execution. If the Supremes wouldn't stop it then Perry won't feel any political heat for not stopping it.

Smells of politics....if this were really that important, couldn’t Obama commute the sentence himself?

This whole story isn’t true. I know that.

Even though we have no way of screening any illegal alien, Obama and the media have taught me every “undocumented murderer” (I meant worker) is a future doctor or lawyer, and they are the best people in our nation.

Some republican racist must have made up this rape murder story because they are a hater.

/s x infinity.

Ater the miscarriage of justice we had in Orlando this week, I really don’t think the public is in the mood for lenience.

He can issue a pardon only for Federal crimes. Which he might have to do when Gunwalker comes home to roost.

The presdient only has the power to commute or pardon a convict on a federal case. This was crime against the people of the sstate of Texas.

If you are correct, Obama’s effort will backfire. Most Americans support the death penalty: particularly when carried out against the torturer/rapist/killer of a young girl.

With the missed opportunity at hog tying the TSA, Governor Perry needs to build some credibility with all of us conservative independents. Fry the scum!
