She has voted with the leadership on every vote she has cast in congress.

I would propose that any new tax is unneeded.

Half the government budget needs to be abolished. That would balance it.

I would not and could not pay your proposed tax. I bet a majority of the country could not and would not. Any attempt by the federal government to collect such a thing would probably cause armed rebellions.

Make the politicians and bureaucrats who spent all that money pay it back. How about a new 15% tax on government employees, after we fire about half.

I think you austerity tax would delegitimize the federal government in the eyes of a majority of the country. Plus even if it was done it would suck money out of the economy that could put us into a deep recession.

Taxes are not too low. Spending by the federal government must be slashed deeply.

Many conservatives believe that we should have a series of these smaller deals between now and November 2012 - the American people will learn on multiple occasions who the spenders truly are, and who is serious about the debt, and who is not.

We know for certain that Geithner and Obama only have two goals: kill the Republicans and kill the country.

The House can tell the engineer (obama) and the fireman (geithner) what to do to stop the runaway train.

But do we really think Obama and Geithner wouldn't gladly do anything....stoke the fire, start a fire in the coal car, and jump clear....in order to create a crisis to take advantage of?

Raising the limit is probably Obama's first preference. An opportunity to hammer conservatives -and- republicans for any problems after not raising it is his second (perhaps first) choice. A slow trickle of month-to-month increases is probably his last political preference (Obama doesn't care what damage any of the options above do to the country.

All of this instantaneous hand-wringing is stupid, unwarranted and unbefitting FR.

Instantaneous hand-wringing without bothering to consider the enemy's perspective is stupid, unwarranted and has become the norm for FR.

Federal spending must be gutted. We could probably reduce it to half.

You austerity tax proposal would lead to the end of legitimacy for the federal government. Armed revolt. Most Americans could not pay such a tax if a gun were held to their head. I guess you don’t understand that.

The bureaucrats and politicians created the debt, they should pay for it. Not us. We should take up arms if something that stupid passed.

Even if it happened it would only suck capital from the country and push us into a deep generational depression.

Look, I'm just trying to save American face by repaying our debt.

I thought you would at least like, following that crushing one-time tax, a 10% flat tax on all earned income (compared to 28%; 35%; the current graduated rates). How about we also cut the corporate tax rates in half?

ALL OF THIS, though, is after and contingent upon fixing the current mess...

Let's also fire half of the government employees as you propose. Let's also cut spending to about 1/4 its current levels. The problem with the latter is winning popular support from an electorate infatuated with American Idol. Any ideas on that side?

The “one time crushing tax” you propose will not get paid by the vast majority of Americans. I think we should literally slaughter any politician that tries to support it and any tax collector that tries to collect it. I don’t know where you get the idea that the average American has $45,000 laying around.

I guess they can throw 150 million Americans in the gulag for failure to proffer their wealth unto the fatherland.

It is NOT their money. WE do not owe it, in my opinion. THEY owe it. The ones who created this mess. We should take it from their hide.

You argue for “crushing taxes” yet when it comes to spending cut you clam we need popular support. Somehow we don’t need any popular support for throwing every American into deep poverty and a generational depression? You think Americans will be fine with that?

All this so Obama can waste another Trillion to stimulate his base? The national debt is an existential threat to the U.S. What don't they understand? We can no longer afford even the interest on this debt and it must be controlled. The only leverage Republicons have is to not raise the debt ceiling and here they go pissing that away.. What makes them think 8 months from now things will be different? All they are doing is giving Obama a chance to reload on them and have his lapdogs accuse them of throwing grandma and grandpa off the cliff. Don't they realize that as the economy progressively gets worse under this Presidents jobs killing scheme it will be harder and harder to convince people that they must make sacrifice with austerity measures in order to save the country. The Rats only want more time for complete implosion of the economy so that from the ashes they can rebuild their Utopian Marxist society. The greatest generation gave their lives so that a Nazi dictator and a crazed totalitarian Emperor would not control the world, they saw the threat for what it was and they gave selflessly. Their children and grandchildren can either rise to the occasion and give selflessly by allowing entitlement programs to be reformed, or they can listen to the Democrats and their corrupt social compact and demand selfishly that the future generation of taxpayers continue to fund their retirement liabilities unchecked and unchanged to the detriment of the entire nation.

You send yours in first. And how will you guarantee anyone that’s just a one time deal? If the mob finds out you have money to spare, they’ll just want more of it.

The trouble with any “austerity tax” is that the masses want their bread and circus and the Dems think that giving in will win them votes. It’s truly gotten to where the people are voting themselves money from the government and redistributing the wealth.

The problem is this: "We" (I don't mean you and me, who probably voted the other way) put them in office. Therefore, it is our problem, as much as we hate the fact.

The $45,000 per person is a misnomer. I'm suggesting the tax would apply to past unearned income (dividends, interest) rather than earned income (the kind someone actually worked for). If your or my unearned income is only 10%, then the tax would only apply to x% of that 10%. Therefore, those hit the hardest would be those who are also producing the least, or taking in the most in ratio to their actual work output.

It could therefore win popular support among regular Americans who are actually working for their money, since they would be least impacted.

In exchange, after the mess is fixed we have a friendlier business environment in which to rebuild.

Is America - specifically, her economic independence - worth something like this to you? It's going to require pain - somewhere.

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result the democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy ensuing, always to be followed by a dictatorship, then a monarchy.”

May “We the People” realize the wisdom of this quote before it’s too late. We need someone to unite the Republic and stamp out this kind of corruption which is fueled by Liberals and their ilk.

And how will you guarantee anyone that’s just a one time deal?

People will be hopping mad for one thing, and probably turn off American Idol and start paying attention for once!

I know, hocndoc, that your assessment is correct. It's not just the people voting for money from the government, though. EVERYONE is after a free lunch, an income for doing nothing whether from the government or from dividends. Speaking generally, we've lost our drive to innovate and have become adept instead at getting free lunches.

Yes, I would make whatever personal sacrifices necessary. Others gave their blood; it's a very small thing for me to give up an RV or even a house... I hope everyone who loves America would say the same.

I really believe that a sacrifice such as what I am suggesting by way of austerity consitutes "sackcloth and ashes" in God's sight, that this is what the "humble themselves" in 2 Chronicles 7:14 actually looks like in our own time and place.

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Not raising the debt limit will not do any harm to the country, in fact, it will go a long way toward reassuring our Asian trade partners.

Unplug the gravy train is our only possible course of action.
