2 Republicans Open Door to Increases in Revenue

By JOHN M. BRODER

WASHINGTON — Two senior Republicans said Sunday that they might be open to raising new government revenue as part of a deal to resolve the dispute over the federal debt ceiling, but they warned that there was little time to enact a comprehensive deal.

One of the senators, John Cornyn of Texas, said he would consider eliminating some tax breaks and corporate subsidies in the context of changes in the tax code, provided there was not an overall increase in taxes.

“I think it’s clear that the Republicans are opposed to any tax hikes, particularly during a fragile economic recovery,” Mr. Cornyn said on “Fox News Sunday.” “Now, do we believe tax reform is necessary? I would say absolutely.”

But he insisted that any changes in taxes be “revenue neutral,” meaning that the government would not take in any more money from individuals or businesses than it does now.

I’m glad a few others see this spin by the NYT for what it is. This is exactly how the left wins,by turning us against our own. Almost all the freepers posting here have fallen for it. While I think Cornyn could do better than he does on some issues, I’m not ready to throw him under the bus just because the NYT says to do so.

Cornyn did not say the Republicans should compromise. He said no raised taxes. Get what we can get now, then look at tax reform after Aug. 2. But he went into a long explanation about why the American people would not accept tax increases.

She made ONE appearance on his behalf during his campaign for reelection in 2010.

Only one?

Either you are deluded from drinking too much Palin™ brand Kool-Aid, or you are flat out lying.

She attended multiple rallies, including at least one fundraiser. She participated in a national interview on Fox. She authored a disgusting op-ed piece for The Arizona Republic in which she praised McCain's record of attacking conservatives. Oh, and she recorded radio spots for McCain too.

All of this is documented on FR. If I wasn't on vacation, I would dig it up for you; but either way, I don't think it would matter until you stop drinking the Kool-Aid.

yep, they ask for more revenues to wage their war on “fair” revenues... so that they can have additional leverage in this war... This is beyond infantile and ridiculous behavior.

All they need to do is get rid of these policies.

” BS! She made ONE appearance on his behalf during his campaign for reelection in 2010. That was just a pay back she felt she owed him for the 2008 selection of her as his VP candidate. ....He wanted her to do more events with him during his reelection bid and she DID NOT do so”

I don’t know if you are delusional, grossly misinformed, or just lying. I was right there in Scottsdale. She made 4 appearances at highly staged events. The biggest was at the Biltmore hotel, where she raised millions from people like Jim Click, and Dave Horton. Then she did an ad stating that McCain was the finest man she has known. The ad ran over 700 times, and cost McCain several million dollars.

Cornyn did not say the Republicans should compromise. . .

Yet that's exactly what he is doing.

Get what we can get now, . . .

We can get $1.6 trillion in spending cuts for the next year alone. Is Cornyn on board for this? Unfortunately, no.

And Palin also went on several interviews on FOX news, stumping for McNasty. It appears Palin's worshipers have both, selective memories as well as standards.

Currahee, a Cherokee word meaning “We Stand Alone Together”.

The motto of the 506th Infantry Regiment, a unit of the 101st Airborne Division.

” That Palin dividend is really paying off.

How she could justify backing this POS over Hayworth is something I’ll go to my grave shaking my head over. “

McCain & Palin are joined at the hip. Palin recently bought a home 6 blocks from McCain in Scottsdale(and 2 blocks from my home, which is rented to a Raytheon exec. who complained about the media fiasco in the neighborhood).

My guess is Palin will get McCain to give her his senate seat.

The problem with that here is the folks who have been playing by the rules are stuck with paying for Congress’s mistakes. Any tax code changes should come in a separate piece of legislation.

I think there may be a Senate seat involved, but not from McNuts. It may be coming from Jon Kyl who is stepping down in 2012.

It's my guess, that this has to be part of her plan, to reestablish her broken record as well as gain Beltway experience. Because of her relentless campaign for McNuts in 2010, Palin has gained popularity in Arizona and could probably win.

Palin will need the same RINO millionaires as McCain(like Jim Click) to pull it off, but I fear you are correct. It cost McCain 21 million to beat Hayworth(1.6 million)
