Gonna be one heck of a problem for Japan in the long haul. That area of Japan near the plants will be uninhabitable for a long time. And it looks like the government will try to cover up the extent of the problem for as long as they can. We had three major core meltdowns and an explosion in a 4th reactor system due to the spent fuel pool. Hard to grasp that the Japanese government knew that radioactive fallout was going to hit certain areas of Japan hard in mid March and they remained silent.

I can envision an immediate social problem: creating whole new class of outcasts. Many people in Fukushima Perfecture, including those whom their gov said are safe-distance away from, were irradiated way beyond the official limit. People will shun them. It would be difficult that those from Fukushima can marry outsiders. The fear of birth defect and long-term health weigh heavily on them. Their health is always viewed as suspect. It will impact their employment as well.

If Japanese gov acted fast and decisively, evacuating a lot more people, this could have been avoided.
