How Congress Was Duped into Repealing Military Gay Ban

Center for Security Policy | Jun 27, 2011
By Frank Gaffney, Jr.

One of the more sordid moments in recent congressional history came during last December's lame-duck session.  Democratic majorities on both sides of Capitol Hill rammed through a controversial repeal of the 1993 statute (wrongly described as "Don't Ask, Don't Tell") which prohibited avowed homosexuals from serving in the armed forces.

The Senate and House leadership did so with scarcely any hearings and extremely limited opportunity for debate.  This action amounted to a raw abuse of power, a last gasp by an Obama administration able and determined to appease gay activists - a key political constituency - before the setbacks of November's elections made doing so vastly more difficult.

We now know, however, that it was a gambit made possible by deliberate efforts by senior executive branch officials to mislead the Congress into taking a step that the administration's own surveys had established would be deeply injurious to the U.S. military.  Thanks to the release of a previously undisclosed Defense Department Inspector General investigation report, recently analyzed by the invaluable Center for Military Readiness (CMR), legislators now have the proverbial "smoking gun" revealing politically motivated misconduct at the highest levels of government.

I don’t think they were duped at all. They knew what they were doing. Use it to vote accordingly.

I don’t buy the ‘duped’ part either. During that infamous lame-duck session, the GOP was on fire, fighting tooth-and-nail for the Bush tax rates. After they got that, they just caved in to Obama on EVERYTHING else. It was beyond pathetic.

Getting the tax issue was all well and good, but the GOP’s pathetic disinterest in every other damned issue was a very, very telling moment. I’ve lost almost every shred of confidence I once had in the Party.

Thanks Neil E. Wright.
...mislead the Congress into taking a step that the administration's own surveys had established would be deeply injurious to the U.S. military.
As well as their own reelection chances, and the future of their political party (irrespective of which party).

Duped? Is the author just stupid? It was a Rat controlled House and Senate and WH that repealed the ban.

Congress did not get duped. They willingly sold out the public interest as they pocketed their six-figure salaries.

I agree they were not duped. They do not care about the average military member. They are going after active duty pay and benefits under the guise of eliminating waste in the DOD. They already disavow retirees while bending over for union pension funds. They never have to sleep next to an openly gay man who already threatened him if he turned him in for sex in the barracks or rape. What do they care duped, hardly.

There's a type of disrupter who attempts to brush Republicans with Democrats sins.

It's a ploy by the Obamistas ~ but it won't work.

As part of any agreement on financial affairs I'd require the Senate to pass and Obama to sign a repeal of the action that rescinded DADT.

There are some other things to have repealed of course, but that's one to force them to do.

The only question is do they value their homosexual buddies more than they do their country.

It was a Rat controlled House and Senate and WH that repealed the ban.

It was ultimately "Republicans" which made the repeal possible, forgoing the number needed to erect a filibuster in the Senate. Thank Scott Brown, the Maine Witches, and others with "R's" next to their names for this abomination.

If the GOP isn't aware of this by now, then we need to broom every last one of them and start over.

In other words, legislators were misled by this selective - and endlessly repeated - distortion...

My four cats aren't even "misled" by anything the dimwit-c'rats say anymore.
