A teenager had emergency brain surgery this week after police say he was the victim of a violent beating in Five Points.
The 18-year-old was running along Blossom Street near the Walgreens and Wachovia after midnight Monday when he was attacked by four men, the Columbia Police Department reported. After the beating, the man managed to run several blocks to Edisto Avenue, where a passerby found him two hours later and called 911, police said.
The teen, whose name was not released by police, was taken to the hospital, where he had emergency surgery to remove a clot from his brain, police reported. The teen remained in critical condition in a Columbia hospital and was expected to have reconstructive surgery on his face, according to police.
The 18-year-old victim had been helping a friend earlier in the night and was jogging back home when he was attacked, said Columbia Police Chief Randy Scott. The chief did not know where the victim had been or where his home was.
The Police Department on Thursday released video footage of men it says are the suspects. The footage, recorded by security cameras in Five Points, shows eight men walking along a sidewalk. Late Thursday, police had eight people in custody and were interviewing them.
Earlier the night of the beating, the group of suspects had tried to attack others, but those people managed to escape unharmed, Scott said.
The police department also has footage for four men darting across the street toward the man, said Jennifer Timmons, the department spokeswoman. However, the department did not release that footage to the public.
All of the footage was provided to police by the Five Points Merchants Association, which has installed dozens of security cameras outside businesses, Scott said.
The security cameras are just one response to increasing concern about crime in Five Points.
A 2 a.m. bar closing, with many exceptions, will go into effect later this summer, and City Council is considering a curfew. The police and fire departments have beefed up overcrowding inspections at bars, and city police are allowed to work off-duty security in the bars.
Strictly Running, a Harden Street shop that sells running gear and organizes training events, has security cameras inside and outside its storefront, said Selwyn Blake, one of the co-owners and a U.S. Track and Field coach. When coaching runners, Blake said he emphasizes safety tips.
But a jogger getting beaten is rare, he said. “I think what you have here is a unique situation, that’s for sure,” Blake said.
Runners more often face injuries caused by distracted drivers and the extreme South Carolina heat, he said. That’s why joggers are advised to run in pairs, to wear identification, to carry cellphones and to wear reflective vests at night. He also suggested runners let someone know when they leave and when they should be expected to return, Blake said.
Strictly Running hosts groups of runners who leave from the store in the early-morning hours. Blake said he feels safe in Five Points but always advises people to use caution.
“You have to remember you are in the city,” he said. “You have to put your city armor on.”

Neal Boortz, on the radio just today, spoke that black males make up 6.7% of our population, yet this small group commits over 48% of all murders.
WHY aren’t “role models” within the black community standing up against this lawlessness and violence? Same argument that is being made regarding Muslims and terrorism. If you aren’t openly against it, could it be that you are for it?
I was actually thinking much longer term on a much broader basis. If the blacks continue acting like this and not policing themselves then the other races (much as I abhor that usage of the word) will eventually have to eradicate the blacks. Kind of like we will have to eradicate moslems.
In the short term it may be messy but coming down on lone white people who defend themselves from a black mob will only cause more white people to arm themselves in self defense. Eventually it will be dangerous for a black person to associate with another black person as the non-blacks will be getting really jumpy.
That's just another pack of urban feral humans out for some fun. They prove the point that "some guys just need killin'".

These are the same doctors who give “them” Handicapped parking permits. I called the cops on two Escalades full a few months ago. At the local Golden Corral.
When I was little there was a certain type of fighting I was warned about. It was a hyphenated type of fighting. I suppose the politically correct way to say it these days would be African-American-Fighting. The gist of the warning was that ‘they’ would gang up on a person and it wouldn’t be fair. Some things never change. The big man gangsta whuppin’ it all up on a cracker. They sure are big men that can do that. I bet they beat their women too ;)~

Usually it is only necessary to display your gun and the thugs will scream and run away. It has happened to me twice.
Both times the perps wasted no time disappearing.
Somehow I missed that, but surmised the “Amish” were involved because of the five to one ratio in the attack.

After changing their pants, the thugs probably went back out and took out their frustrations on some unarmed white guy.
I heard from a local cop that thugs who will laugh at a gun get VERY respectful if the K9 is on duty.
I had a friend who had to "draw" when he refused to buy beer for some people and the perps started to get in his face - they did a very quick vanishing act.

I work at a medical school and the hospital decided to hire a NY advertising firm to tout our superior knowledge. Yep, you guessed it, the “Doctor” advising the dumbass cracker is a young, handsome, obviously highly intelligent black guy. Of course all use old guys wanted to meet this new young black doctor on our faculty because none of us had ever met him. So the incredibly highly paid bureaucrats had to explain to us how insensitive we were being to ask for truth in advertising.
Of course we said maybe if they used one of the many local advert firms instead of shipping our local money to a bunch of yankeee democrat gay types in NY maybe we would have had something akin to reality.
We, the old farts that made the Med Center what it is today, feel if we support the locals then maybe they will support us. But, then again, we are not highly paid, sensitive, administrative types who feel the locals should belly up to the bar during our fund raisers and support us because ?? why? Loyalty is a two way street, a concept lost when you get a MBA.

Problem: in many places simply posessing the weapon is committing a crime.
In the long term, the leukocytes (white blood cells...how fitting) kill off the offending cells that threaten the body.
You can see it in most every advertisement on TV these days. The white male is the helpless, mumbling moron who can only use a BBQ grill a TV remote while drinking weasel pee Lite beer. Supermom is the ONLY one capable of actually cooking a whole meal, doing laundry, caring for the kids, doing the shopping...the list is endless and it pisses me off royally.
