Astronaut Mark Kelly; Arizona’s next senator?

Senator Mark Kelly?

That’s the question in political circles this week. The minute Kelly, 47, announced his retirement from the Navy and NASA Tuesday, the behind-the-scenes speculation that’s been brewing for weeks went public: Will the husband of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords run for office himself?

One of Arizona’s Senate seats is open in 2012, thanks to the retirement of Jon Kyl. Giffords has been polling way ahead of any other Democratic candidate, even amid uncertainty about her recovery. Now the name of her Gulf War vet-turned-astronaut husband is in play.

“Gabrielle is working hard every day on her mission of recovery. I want to be by her side,” Kelly wrote on Facebook Tuesday. Though he has not previously expressed an interest in elected office, he left an intriguing hint: “After some time off, I will look at new opportunities and am hopeful that one day I will again serve our country.”

Oh gag me. So sick of the Dems riding the Gabby Giffords thing for all it’s worth. I’m sorry for what happened to her and glad she’s recoverying, but let’s stop making her and her husband into icons. A lot of people endure grueling injuries far from the limelight. What of the 10s of thousands of our soldiers maimed while in the service of this country? Yet because she’s a woman and a Democrat were suppose to all quiver with awe at the mere mention of her name and that of her husband. Enough already. By all means get well, then get off the stage already.

If he’s running as a dem he’ll need a good sex scandal to burnish his credentials.

considering how right wing our state swung last November, I seriously doubt he has a chance. there are now no elected statewide positions that are held by dems. pretty much anyone could run as a R for Kyl’s seat and win it. even that old communist raul grijalva almost lost his seat to an unknown challenger, it was only some serious last minute cheating that kept him in office.

I wondered how St. Gabrielle would persist in office.
This makes perfect sense.

John Glenn made the perfect idiot lib Senator from Ohio for many years.
