DEVELOPING: The man in custody for carrying a backpack with "suspicious items and products" inside Arlington National Cemetery overnight is a U.S. Marine Corps reservist, military and law enforcement sources tell Fox News.

Yonathan Melaku, a Lance Corporal Marine corps reservist who lives in Virginia and who is Muslim, has been identified as the suspect in custody, Fox News has learned.

Sources close to the investigation also said a notebook believed to belong to the man was found containing threatening phrases like "Al Qaeda," "Taliban rule" and "defeated coalition forces."

The police have described him as "a derranged man," but do not think he is part of a terrorist group. The guy is 22/23 years old, an African American, and a muslim.

I feel a lot better after reading this. Now, I can relax and listen to El Rushbo in peace.

The first reports said they had seen other people running away. Maybe that was an error, but then again...

Spray paint is used against surveillance cameras.

Yes it is.

And if you are carrying spray paint in your backpack in a cemetery after hours it is a strong indication that you might be a vandal with graffiti on your mind.

No more political correctness I can’t stand it anymore, we have to cease carrying the political correctness bucket in the media or we will all be blown to smithereens. Obama and Holder will be sending him lawyers and not declaring anything he did as a TERRORIST ACT. Like they did the Fort Hood Shooter. Yet...the loony Az. shooter kid was declared a terrorist. What kind of backwards logic is that?

The enemy has infiltrated from within EVEN OUR OWN MILITARY.Until we address this up front it will only worsen.

A notebook containing “threatening” phrases???

Says who???

I would say it might be a notebook containing actual “notes” on who and what the enemy is...

My last makes about as much sense as the analysis by the media in this case...

If I write the same things...”Al Queada”...”defeat coalition forces”...”IED”...”Martyrdom”...

Does that make me a terrorist???

I would also summize that if a terrorist has to write things like that down...They are not a very good terrorist, because it would already be in their heart to be that type of lifeform...

This has got to be more hype than anything else...

I hope I am wrong...But I am not buying the original theory here...

"Suspect in Custody for 'Suspicious' Backpack Is Marine Corps Reservist"

Liberal goofs that read this headline only will assume the guy is a white Christian male, you know.

"Yonathan Melaku, a Lance Corporal Marine corps reservist who lives in Virginia and who is Muslim, has been identified as the suspect in custody..."

Let's not jump to any conclusions, now. Remember, diversity is our strength. Islam is a religion of peace. Racial profiling is wrong.

(did I hit all the high notes?)

At least Fox has now put "Muslim" on their website.

I'll bet not another media outlet even mentions it.

A little late after Ft. Hood, wouldn’t you say?

I'd sooner be inconsistently right than consistently wrong.

Thanks, relee...that clears things up. I guess he was lurking in the cemetary after parking his car outside.

FOX now saying that he is being "uncooperative." Sounds like some threat of waterboarding might be needed. Hmmm

He has a record for three counts of auto theft. A real upstanding representative of our U.S. Marines. Geeze, wonder why the Marines have kept him, or when he committed the auto thefts.

“Yeah, right! Funny how they announce that the guy is not a terrorist before they have any information to support it.”

Do these inept investigators actually think the American public buys their garbage? Being or alluding that you are muslim has become a “get out of jail free card”.

Law enforcement officials also told Fox News that police found five pounds of a substance labeled ammonium nitrate inside the backpack — field tests, however, came back negative.

How come all these so-called terrorists, like the shoebomber, the underwear bomber, the Time square bomber, and this guy are always low grade morons who couldn't bake a cake let alone construct a working explosive device. The insurgents in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan or where ever are always building huge devices that are deadly effective. Al qaeda, with all its worldwide resources, can't get one professional operator with real equipment into this country? Hell, they could march thousands of armed soldiers with tons of material over our completely open borders or even waltz them past the TSA screeners who are too busy groping toddlers and old ladies. The American people give up hundreds of billions of dollars and are treated like prisoners in our own country to be protected from the gang that couldn't shot straight?

Background check depends on security level. The higher up, the more they dig.

A Marine 0311? Probably not going to be privy to nuclear secrets. At most they'd run the criminal background history they do on everyone else and not much beyond that.

Even my basic flight line clearance was only a "if they don't need to know, don't tell them" clearance where you basically just don't tell anyone about ongoing deployments.

“Please be more specific.”

Initial reports are normally BS.

For all you know he’s carrying fake ID....

Melaku is a naturalized U.S. citizen who is believed to have joined the U.S. Marine Reserves in 2008 where he rose to the rank of Lance Corporal, New York Police Department Police Chief Raymond Kelly said.

He was out on bond for the 27 car break-ins in Leesburg which happened about 3 weeks ago. Justice in Virginia is swift, they caught him the next day, but I doubt that he's been convicted yet. Details here.
