Venezuela to Begin Rationing Electricity

Venezuela will soon begin rationing electricity in several regions because of recurring power outages, the country's energy minister said Wednesday.

Ali Rodriguez said he has ordered authorities to start scheduling rolling blackouts in affected regions and informing residents when they will be implemented. He did not provide details or say how many of Venezuela's 24 states would be affected.

The plan was presented three days after Venezuelan officials announced measures aimed at saving electricity. They say power consumption must be reduced by 10 percent and have warned that hefty surcharges will be imposed on consumers who don't reduce usage.

Venezuela has experienced three major blackouts in the past three months.

This could soon be the United States. Maybe this summer.

Electric utilities are shutting down older coal plants because upgrading them to meet new pollution regulations would be to expensive.

If we have a heat wave and the utilities can not run these older smaller coal plants to meet demand rolling black outs will become a daily experience for the nation.

The sad thing is that when the lights go out people die. The old and the poor will be hardest hit.

You can thank our glorious leader for that.

An oil-rich nation rations power.

Huh... why?

In a word, socialism.

What Obama wants for you.

Yes, and let’s remember the reason the coal plants have to close: NEW EPA REGULATIONS THAT WILL SUPPOSEDLY SAVE LIVES. Of course, the poor and the old don’t count, when they die, I guess.

In all seriousness, and with all respect to FR readers, God damn the EPA. Lives lost to banning DDT alone are in the millions. The EPA acts like a “regulation factory” that must work hard to increase regulatory output every quarter for some mysterious reason. Somebody needs to shut the dang agency down.

I am trying not to curse. Sometimes I can’t help myself. Maybe I’d better log off.

Well I will try to cheer you up.

Think of it this way; If this EPA program works out Obama can eliminate the Obama Care Death Panels because there will be nothing for them to do.

The EPA will have disposed of all of the weak and infirm during the hot days of summer.

Just a little dark humor for the late night crowd.

Too bad John King from the CNN debates didn't ask his “this or that” question like this one

This or that: shut down the dept of Education or the EPA ? Answer: both !

The regime benefits financially from the old dying. Social security and Medicare payments end as do carbon emissions from that individual. The estate of the deceased will be taxed bringing in additional revenue. Since older people tend to be more conservative, the political benefits are obvious.

Once a citizen ends her or his productive (meaning taxpaying and child rearing) years, that individual has no value to the state. Expect government policy to reflect this fact - death panels, higher retirement age, higher inheritance taxes, limitations on routine medical care, forced incorporation of IRAs and 401Ks into Social Security, as well as intangible taxes on private savings. If current trends continue, the elderly in this country will spend their “golden years” in suvival mode. Can forced euthanasia be far away at a certain age given the benifits to the state?

Our leader’s administration is also about to use environmental regulatory power to kill the planned pipeline bringing petroleum from the Alberta Canada oil sands fields to the US. The oil will end up being shipped to China instead.

Actually, there won’t be any more coal plants thanks to the draconian anti-coal environmental regs recently imposed. Bambi cheerfully announced that by 2014, electricity will be 60% more expensive.

What does he care? I’m sure the heat and lights will still be burning at the WH.

Well the lights will still be burning in the White House in 2014 but he won’t be basking in their glow.

I just love this part: "...and have warned that hefty surcharges will be imposed on consumers who don't reduce usage.

Sooo, typical of socialism, if you have been thrifty and not wasting electricity, cutting your consumption will hurt. If you've been just burning it up, not so.

Go to love the way this system punishes those who have been doing things right. (/s, as if!)

Judith Anne, If the saints themselves weren't ready to spit out an epithet or two, I'd be surprised.

If it wasn't for the ability to preview and eliminate a phrase or two, I'd have been kicked off here about the time duhwon got the nomination.

I wonder about the stats they quoted in one of the poorest regions in the US, what is the result of mold, cold, or other factors, and not electricity. How many lung problems stem more from wood or coal heat, and not the power plants or mining?

Most of the folks I met in the region aren't the type to 'go on relief', either, unlike the big city welfare types who take each case of the sniffles to the ER on our dime.

The whole EPA characterization of the people might be out of line, because by citing those costs they may have maligned them.

I wonder what the annual Medicaid costs are in the region?
