High Hopes at Miracle-Gro in Medical Marijuana Field
Wall St Journal ^ | JUNE 14, 2011 | DANA MATTIOLI

Scotts Miracle-Gro Co. has long sold weed killer. Now, it's hoping to help people grow killer weed.

In an unlikely move for the head of a major company, Scotts Chief Executive Jim Hagedorn said he is exploring targeting medical marijuana as well as other niches to help boost sales at his lawn and garden company.

"I want to target the pot market," Mr. Hagedorn said in an interview. "There's no good reason we haven't."

Sales at Scotts rose 5% last year to $2.9 billion. But the Marysville, Ohio, company relies on sales at three key retailers—Home Depot Inc., Lowe's Cos. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc.—for nearly two-thirds of its revenue. With consumers still cautious about spending, the retailers aren't building new stores as quickly as they used to, making growth for suppliers like Scotts harder to come by. Against that backdrop, Mr. Hagedorn has pushed his regional sales presidents to look for smaller pockets of growth, such as the marijuana market, that together could produce a noticeable bump in sales.

This seems to be a sea-change for corporate America.

Is there money in it? Then the free market wants a cut.

Legal weed would make a lot of people a lot of money. Little Debbie wouldn’t be the only beneficiary by a long shot.

I’d like to point out that Scotts conducts random urine testing of their employees for TOBACCO USE, a fully LEGAL product.

Anything to boost that bottom line. Even if it means enabling despicable behavior and joining sides with scum. As long as it boosts the bottom line.

Hmm. The question is, would it really increase the bottom line, or would marketing to the marijuana grower’s cause so many other potential customers to buy a different brand that it has a neutral or negative effect?

Yep, get caught smoking a cigarette and that bald-headed bastard will fire you on the spot.

Putting neurotoxic weed killer on a plant that people will be smoking right into their bloodstream is basically serving them cancer.

They ought to be careful - the DEA has demolished hydroponic and lighting supplies businesses on more flimsy pretexts than marketing fertilizer to pot growers.

If you think that Philip Morris and RJ Reynolds don’t already have the infrastructure in place to start selling Marlboro Greens inside of a week, you’re deluding yourself.

Anyway, you legalize it and you take cartels and smugglers out of the equation. Lotta people in California and Tennessee that would jump at the chance to grow and sell on an industrial level.

I think it’s just a matter of time. It’ll probably wind up on the same level as beer and wine. Make the legal age 18 or 21+. We’ve already got DUI laws on the books, so if you’re somehow *speeding* while high, you wind up with the same treatment. Not sure how you could breathalyze for pot, but c’mon, it would seem obvious if someone’s stoned behind the wheel.

It’s like, sure you CAN make your own beer, but how many people actually DO? Most people just grab a twelve pack at the store. I foresee the same sort of thing happening.

Maybe we could put dealers to work as actual employees, I dunno.

I’ll never buy a product from a company that supports the legalization of pot.

What an idiot! What makes him think that people have not been using Miracle grow for decades to grow everything..including pot plants? He must be a brain dead liberal and just had to make some kind of ‘statement’.

No more Miracle Gro for me. These kinds of political statements from corporate CEO’s..turns me off..BIG TIME!

Makes little sense. Why would there be a direct relationship between number of stores and product sold? Are there large areas of the country where people can't find Scott products if they want them?

Cool, and I’ll never buy a product from a company that opposes the legalization of pot.

We can cancel each other out.
