Breaking: Edwards indicted on conspiracy, false statement charges

As expected, the Department of Justice landed with both feet on former Senator and one-time Democratic nominee for Vice President John Edwards today. The DoJ released a grand jury indictment on six counts — four of illegal campaign contributions, and one each of conspiracy and making false statements to the FEC:

John Edwards, a two-time candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination and a former U.S. senator from North Carolina, was indicted today on charges of conspiracy and false statements.

The indictment is the culmination of a secretive federal probe that has been going on for more than two years.

The investigation has centered on allegations that donations to Edwards were used to support Rielle Hunter, his former mistress and mother of his now-3-year-old daughter.

If a republican, republicans would face election losses.

If republicans would learn to use this stuff, democrats would face more losses. This isn’t some random congressman.

I think he is being made an offer he can’t refuse. Go under this bus, or we put you under this train. You’ve embarrassed the Democrats too much. Shoo.

Reason being, and I’ve said it before, Edwards is accused of accepting as a “campaign contribution” monies that no campaign would ever list for the purpose Edwards put them to — to seclude a paramour. And if it did list them it would be accused of misusing campaign money. So, technically I wonder if it even qualifies as a crime, although it is as sleazy and immoral as all hell.

I have mixed feelings about Edwards getting tangled up in the arcane campaign laws.

There should be one election law - Get a buck, post the donor’s name and amount on your web site within 24 hours.

I feel the same way. I will shed no tears for this phony, but the charges seem contrived.

What is he charged with : Crimes against the government?

I don’t like the idea that other people can know if you make a political donation. It’s like voting before the days of the secret ballot. Somehow it’s supposed to make the election process more honest, I suppose, but it means that leftists can harass people who donate to causes they don’t like.

Me thinks the DNC wanted the remainder of his campaign coffers. He would not play, so now he pays!

Let us parenthetically note that this gentleman, now indicted, is a Democrat.

Let us place that designation near the front of the first paragraph in the first paragraph.

Oh, I forgot, we don’t mention in the press that this actually happened, because it was a Democrat involved...

Never mind.

How does a democrat get indicted for making false statements? Where do they start? How do they pick one? Every word out of their mouths is a false statement
