Studies: Missed meds waste billions
Published: May 27, 2011 at 11:02 AM
WASHINGTON, May 27 (UPI) -- Studies say Americans who don't take prescribed medications waste billions annually because the missed doses lead to emergency room visits and hospitalizations.
A study by Express Scripts, an independent prescription- filling company, says the problem costs $258 billion a year, while a second study by CVS Caremark, Harvard University and Brigham and Women's Hospital put the figure at $290 billion, USA Today reported Friday.

"Drugs don't work if you don't take them, and people often don't take them the way they're supposed to," Bob Nease, chief scientist at Express Scripts, said.
The CVS study estimated that if 35 percent of people in a group of 100,000 failed to take their medications as directed, there would be 16 heart attacks, five strokes and seven deaths, Troyen Brennan, chief medical officer for CVS Caremark, said.
People miss medication doses because they neglect to refill their prescriptions, forget to take them, decide they don't need them or feel they can't afford them, Edith Rosato of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores said.

Edith Dingbat is full of shit.
I'm trying to imagine;
Doctor, I feel like shit
Did you take the meds I prescribed?
Not all
Asshole, HERE, take THESE neds instead
Thanx doc
I just don't see it.
And who made it law that emergency rooms have to see you whether you can pay or not?
Turn health care over to government so to fix the problem.
With all the guaranteed waste in government, forgetting to take your med's won't be an issue, the med's won't be there to forget.
More Nanny State crapola.
As if more were needed.
The more medications they miss the healthier they will be. Americans are over medicated and over diagnosed. Besides, there is no pill you can take for stupid.
Trying getting any ‘flagged for prior approval’ from them. RED tape upon red tape hoops to jump through.
Not more than a whisker’s difference between Ryan’s plan for the first 10 years than 0’care. All gut & gut, NO REFORMS to the built in Medicare palm greasing for the past 40+ years.

What does this mean in terms of access to health care? No one knows for sure, but it almost certainly means that seniors will have difficulty finding doctors who will see them and hospitals who will admit them. Once admitted, they will enjoy fewer amenities such as private rooms and probably a lower quality of care as well.
........................................................
No, seniors will end up with the return of 10 patient ward rooms at some public hospital, where the deadly germ rates are high. Good luck finding a doc with the gut/cuts coming under both plans.
Not all seniors were lucky enough to work jobs that had 401K’s or pension plans. And 0’s wrecking of our economy has eaten big holes into their savings.
Whenever I get a new RX I ask for a week’s worth, by that time I will know if the side effects will be harmful.
I prefer samples from the Doc, to see if I should fill the RX.
Some drugs should have NEVER made it past the FDA. Lyrica (50% failure rate due to side effects) is one of them google the side effects...and those mentioned on TV are only a fraction of what this nasty drug does.
Would you continue taking a drug that makes you sicker than the illness you have? It is one of the reasons we are piggy backing drugs now.
Doc changed my Syntroid to the generic form to save money, (no ins) within 5 days I was back at the drug store DEMANDING they take them back and give me the Synthroid brand, and I’d pay the difference. I had ulcers in my mouth and could barely eat from the generic and was so tired and the muscle cramps were back. Not all generics are equal. And this is one of them. :-)
Yes Edith DING BAT we are smart enough to know not to continue to take drugs that make us feel like a pile of dung. It is not that we forgot, it’s because the meds make us SICKER with their side effects. Missing 1 dose does not make a crisis. DUH!
Coming soon: Big Brother will make you take your meds.
A gram is better than a damn.
It’s amazing, something that the medical community has know for greater than 30 years is making headlines.
“Nexium the little purple pill” I had a 300 lb patient tell me she takes it so she can eat pizza after midnight. It’s only approved for short term use, but I see people on it for years. Stomach acid exists for a reason you dummy.
Don’t take any medication that hasn’t been on the market for ten years, especially something advertised on T.V.
Oh, BULL!
No way are they going to pay to fly sick seniors to the UK for 'treatment'.
Side effects may include but are not limited to
Anger, hostility, rage, suicide, suicidal thoughts,
Anxiety, Fear, Paranoia, Bloating, Gas, Piles, Heart
attack, Stroke, Blindness, Hearing loss, Glossolalia,
and death.......all this to have longer eye lashes?
We will have our own wards here in the USA if we don’t get this sucker repealed.
And don’t pedal Ryan’s bill either, for the first 10 years it is identical to 0’care. And neither bill have reforms of the 40+ years of palm greasing that has caused Medicare to be in the shape it’s in. Along with the genocide of the unborn future tax payers.
Instead we ‘import’ illegals who work for low wages, pay no taxes except sales taxes. That’s one no one gets out of paying unless you order online. And they find a way to get on SS, Medicare even though they never paid taxes into those systems.
Lyrica was sold as a wonder drug for nerve pain. Side effects are HORRENDOUS. 1 50 mg pill in 30 mins had every OA joint in my body screaming at puke level pain. It attacked my hands, feet, and back. Threw the things in the trash bin. My Primary Care doc worked in a pain clinic, said the failure rate was 50% because of the side effects.
All arthur meds have gastro side effects. Ask me I know, I’ve had them all until my arthritis doc threw up his hands and said there was nothing more he could do for me. This was after the drugs shut down my gastro intestinal system. Took 6 weeks to get each of the different ‘try’s’ out of my system.
My primary care doc gives me 7.5 mg of lore tab, anti-puke med, and 5 mg of valium twice a day. Makes life with OA and Fibromyalgia bearable.
Google the side effects of any new drug you are prescribed, get only a 1 week supply to see if it is feasible for you to take it, it will save you money in the long run.
