Memorial Day weekend is here which means it's the official start of swimming pool season. This year though, you may want to think twice before jumping in and making a splash.
There has been a nationwide recall of 1 million pool and spa drain covers that could trap you or your child, despite their federal "seal" of approval.
"We're finding out the laboratories misrepresented their testing procedures," said Albert Rizzo, of Rizzo Pools in Newington.
Rizzo says the timing couldn't be worse.
"If you have one main drain, I would tell you not to swim in the pool. Now I don't expect any of the kids to listen though, so my advice would be keep them in the shallow end and away from the deep end where the main drains are," Rizzo said.

Use to teach a kid... don’t touch a hot stove... don’t go near that vent, drain or whatever... I remember being taught these things. Don’t climb up on the roof and jump with your pillowcase parachute... dumb stuff like that...
I also don't give my kid hot dogs. 17% of all choking incident with kids involve the perfect throat plug.
It’s happened many times, too many times, just google it.
And still some of them just have to try it for themselves. Or they think those dangers only apply to other people. Teens particularly have an immortality complex. They can dance on the top of a car going 150 and nothing is going to happen. Even sober kids do these things. Even the nicest kids in the world die this way. I know several cases of wonderful smart kids from the nicest families dying from stupid accidents. How about three kids on an ATV flying through the woods? One dead. How about texting while flying down a two lane road? One dead. Both were sober.
Why are you telling me this? I think you meant to respond to someone else.
Of course I meant Baker. Thanks for the correction.
They always will and legislating will not change it. Our living environment cannot be designed to eliminate all dangers. Common sense needs to kick in.
