Campaign Crawlers The Cain Train Picks Up Steam

By Robert Stacy McCain on 5.20.11 @ 6:08AM

Four years ago at the studios of WSB Radio in Atlanta, I interviewed talk-radio host Herman Cain, who had only recently recovered from cancer. He smiled as he vowed, "Death's going to have to catch me, and it's going to have to run fast."

Cain is smiling more than ever now, and running strong with a Republican presidential campaign that has surged to national prominence since the May 5 debate in Greenville, S.C. In a Fox News focus group of South Carolina GOP voters following that debate, pollster Frank Luntz asked for a show of hands: "How many of you think Herman Cain won the debate?" More than half the participants raised their hands. Luntz was flabbergasted, calling the result "unprecedented." Luntz then went around the room, asking what it was that made the retired restaurant executive so appealing.

"He's likeable," one man said, summarizing a key factor in Cain's campaign that seems to elude pundits. For the past two weeks, the political intelligentsia has struggled to understand how the former CEO of Godfather's Pizza, who has never held elective office, could have suddenly emerged as a contender in a crowded Republican 2012 primary field. It's never been a mystery to Cain's communication director Ellen Carmichael.

New slogan: “If you don’t vote for Cain, you’re racist”. No wait. That’s no good.

It will be interesting to watch the MSM and other liberal deal with Cain.

I’ll tell you why Herman Cain is becoming “The Man” for millions of American voters. Brains, common sense, candid speaker, one of the people, a true American success story. He is an inspiration to all Americans, and....darn it, he should be!!! God bless him and his inner strength and courage in his fight against cancer. As the street brothers like to rant, Hermie, I Got Your Back!!! We, the people got your back, Herman Cain!!!

Barry will say something like this.

“The biggest decision my opponent has made is whether to offer the monkey bread or the chocolate chip cookie as the dessert in the deal of the month.”

Then, it will be open season on Cain, who I like above all candidates. The MSM will mock his experience in the private sector, and probably find some disgruntled Godfather’s employees who will talk of pubic hairs on a Coke can.

Cain has my attention.

First of all, I’m sure he has an authentic birth certificate. He actually earned his bachelors and Master’s degree (and I’m sure you’ll easily find his school records). He is an entrepreneur rather than a “community organizer”, and he is a successful private business owner.

He appears to have a close family relationship with his wife and children, and he was raised in a healthy home.

I’d like to learn more about his spiritual, political, and social views. Although, I’m not impressed by his support for Mitt Romney.

Easy. Just go back and see how they treated Clarence Thomas. You haven't seen racism until you've seen the leftwing a-holes deal with a conservative black.

You’re right. And a lot of the ignorant will beleive it word for word.

And 0bama would mess his pants if he was called on to debate Cain.

Cain was politely acknowleged then summarily dismissed as having a snowball’s chance in hell by all three of Bret Baeir’s panel tonight, including Charles Krauthammer.

It’s a good thing I value their recommendations about as much as I value Rosanne Barr’s favorite restaurants list.

All the things you say about Cain is true; and in addition to that, I like the fact that if HE were the R candidate, the RACE CARD would be removed from the deck and out of play. I still love Sarah; but if Cain is the candidate I will work just as hard for him and contribute the same amount of money.

So, just for the hell of it, and just for fun, what would the group think about a Cain/Bachman Ticket in 2012??

For starters, it would completely negate the race card. I think Michelle makes a great VP Candidate, and if they run on a populist Conservative Plank, they could well be invincible.

I still think the battle for the nomination will be much bloodier than the battle against Obama. But Herman Cain impresses me, enough to want to hear a lot more from him in the immediate future. Enough with the distractions (Trump!) and on with the Campaign...

And let us not forget we still have an enormous Congressional Race to consider as well......

You mean former Walter Mondale speech writer? The man who says Cain is there for entertainment purposes? Kraut, please go away.

The problem I see the media bringing up with Herman Cain is the “heart beat away” thing. He is in cancer remission and who ever he picks as a VP will be attacked since he is so solid and presents a problem attacking directly. The VP will be held to presidential standards...read crucified in the press for every single gotcha...completely unlike whoever our current VP is.
