So, the 717 designation has been applied to two different planes -- the KC-135 and the MD-95 (or DC-9, as it used to be).

Yes...as well as early designs of the 720s.

Pilot, Co-pilot, Nav?

What about the boomer.

It’s likely the Nav was replaced by INS and GPS. The KC-10 have been flying without Navs since the beginning. The KC-135 phased them out in the 90s.

I am a little embarrassed to say that I had never heard of “Omega Tankers” (www.omegaairrefueling.com). So it really was a 707! Commercial air refueling is very a intriguing idea. Sadly, it looks like the company just lost half it's 707 fleet.

A 720. You can tell the difference by looking at the overwing escape door. The 720 has one and the 707 has two. The 720 saw some limited civilian use but airlines wanted the longer 707 for extra passenger capacity so the 720 was used mostly by the military for refueling and other missions (RC-135, VIP etc.)

I think they are dousing the surrounding area as this IS California...and brushfires are a way of life...along with mudslides, earthquakes, fruits and nuts....

I tell folks about them on the -135s, they don't want to believe me. ;)

It's time for a new tanker in the fleet. Screw the politics.

Right on. It's almost a no-brainer to pick a current airframe and get on with it. I can't see why it's so expensive, and never did understand why not more KC-10's.

A KC 135 is a turboprop......"

KC135 is a jet powered tanker. I think you mean KC-130, which is a turboprop.

“Ejection seats?”

Good gawd, they are really ignorant.

Why do they let “reporters” report on something they know nothing about.

Ask the reporter why an aircraft can fly and you will likely get something along the lines of “Well, little angels pull the plane into the sky.”

Because if they didn't, 'reporters' couldn't report on ANYTHING............
