South Carolina governor signs voter photo ID bill

Governor Nikki Haley on Wednesday signed into law a bill that requires voters to show photo identification at the polls, making South Carolina the tenth state to adopt such legislation.

The measure landed on the Republican governor's desk after state senators voted 26-16 last week to concur with the House of Representatives bill, which requires people to show a driver's license, military identification or passport along with their voter registration card when they vote.

Those who don't have a photo ID must obtain a new voter registration card that includes a photo. A birth certificate or passport can be used to prove identity.

"If you can show a picture to buy Sudafed, if you can show a picture to get on an airplane, you should be able to show a picture to make sure that we do what is incredibly inherent in our freedoms and that is the ability to vote," Haley said at the signing ceremony in Columbia.

Similar legislation died in the state Senate in 2010.

During contentious debate this spring, Democrats called the legislation "voter suppression" and said it was pushed by Republicans soon after Barack Obama was elected president.

Well, not that there was much doubt, but count SC to stay a red state in 2012.

How dare they discriminate against the poor, minority, bisexual and transgendered like this. Have they not a shred of humanity?

I showed my ID card just to get to City hall, did the same thing to Hertz to rent a car, same thing when Ralph’s asked for it when I paid by credit card on groceries...

But illegals SHOUT RACISM when a cop asks for a driver license..

Why are we hearing so little complaining about this?

Shouldn’t the ACORN and other Leftist types be howling from the rooftops about the unfairness, the racism, the sheer unAmerican bigotry of this entire attempt to clean up vote fraud?

Instead, they’re quiet. Too quiet.

Anyone has a list of the ten states that have similar laws?

Texas will be the 11th State to adopt the Voter ID Bill. It will be signed into law very soon.

HAHAHA! The liberals are screaming because their voter fraud days in South Carolina are over. I’ve been automatically showing my voter card and license for quite some time.

I think that we need to have companion bills signed into law. Bills that state each absentee ballot must have a finger print on it. The finger print to be scanned upon receipt at the polling place and if it doesn’t match the finger print on record of the voter, the ballot is thrown out. Absentee ballots are the biggest source of fraud.

I've been showing my photo ID and voter registration card since 1969, when I first voted in Florida. It really surprises me that any state would not require ID for voting. I still can't understand same day registration, since anyone could vote multiple times, and no one would know until after the outcome was irreversible.

Another note about Florida. They have to match the signature on voting day to the signature on our voter registration card and photo ID.

One are I never seem to see addressed and that is mail-in ballots. Seems like early voting lasts forever lately so don’t know why anyone needs to mail their ballot unless they are totally incapacitated or serving in the Military. Whoops, forgot about the deceased voters.

I’m really glad this got passed and signed. It will virtually eliminate voter fraud in SC. But it will make working at the polls much more pleasant. No more arguments.

Nikki Haley BUMP!!
