May 14, 2011 Hundreds of teachers, parents and students rallied in Pershing Square on Friday to protest budget cuts and urge legislators for ballot measures to help fund education.
The protest was part of a weeklong series of events around the state intended to draw attention to education funding. Over the past three years, state lawmakers have approved nearly $20 billion in cuts to K-12 schools and public colleges.
"If we don't get the extension, then public education in California will die," said A.J. Duffy, president of United Teachers Los Angeles, at an afternoon press conference.

It’s almost impossible to get piglets to give up the free-milk teat.
So, to clarify, they don't want to miss out on raises and increases in the state and local contributions to their health plans, and if they don't get their way, they'll shut down education.
Alas, there's precious few in the media who'd call them on these flat out lies, so we've got another ‘protest against cuts.’ Fire them all, start again, this time without the outrageous benefits, the mega salaries, and the super retirements.
You promise!
I'll volunteer to dig holes and throw dirt on ya'
Yeppers the Ca. teachers and education system need more funds not less. If not then the Gay agenda will suffer cutbacks in the classrooms and the very nation itself will be endangered./sc
There is no "media" here in california. The media's just a myth. There's just liberal mouthpieces, that's it.
From the overhead picture I saw the majority were wearing red. A little solidarity with commies.
I love Pershing Sq, especially their free summer lunch series. They have the St paddy’s day celebrations. Unfortunately, it attracts the whackjobs too.
The movie The Cartel about NJ explains it best.
Califeducation has been dead for a long time. Better have feral kids than brainwashed zombies into fisting at tax payer’s expense.
Yeah, I am not sure what the fight is for... no more happy hippie calling for peace all of a sudden. Their fangs now betray the cultic partying recruiting effort for a real war.
The REd Riding hood meets the real “grandma”.
urge legislators for ballot measures to help fund education.
And when the ballot measures are voted down then what?
It’s time to walk naked back into the woods and grill dragonflys rather than tolerate the educrats, commies and education worshippers.
And so, Mr. Duffy, please explain how this is a bad thing for CA residents? There are many ways to educate our children and adults that don't involve union teachers.
As a matter if fact, this is probably the best thing that could happen because it would open the teaching monopoly to competition. Of course a lot of highly compensated political hacks and “educators” would find out how it feels to stand in the unemployment line.
Public education died about 35 years ago when the Dept of Education took over.
Is that a promise? If so, let's spread it to the rest of the U.S. especially the teacher union thugs in WI.
Just saw a sign in the store,$19,000,000.went to Contra Costa County schools, courtesy of the Cal State Lottery. How much money do these F’n schools need?
I remember when my grand-daughter was in school, her teacher told the class how poor he was.He didn’t have any money and his mother has to help him.He further told the students he had very little money to even feed his cat.My grand-daughter came home and packed up some cans of cat food. Her mom asked “where was she going with the cat food”?”Well, the teachers so poor he can’t feed his cat.”
shut down the whole failed system and switch to virtual schools where students can log on to the internet and down load their lessons. No need for teachers, administrators, bureaucrats, unions, etc. Get rid of practically all of them.
