Research Help: Spiro Agnew a Natural Born Citizen?

Posted on 05/08/2011 8:40:39 AM PDT by rhubarbb

Sorry if this is in the wrong area, this is my first time posting. I'm a long-time lurker who loves FR and I use what I learn all the time against my friends, some of whom (Unfortunately) are liberal. It's the price of going to a big college. I'm really good about speaking the truth to them and showing how they're wrong, and most of my best arguments come from FR. But there's been one question that one of my friends keeps repeating and while I know he's wrong I can't prove it and it's bugging me.

I know the best researchers are here and I figured someone here has figured out how to set the Obama-bots straight on the issue. I've searched through all the other threads on eligibility and didn't find anything.

======

My friend says that Spio Agnew (Nixon's VP) proves that you don't need two citizen parents to be a Natural Born Citizen.

Now, I know that the Vice President must meet the same elgibility requirements as the President, and therefore must also be a Natural Born Citizen (12th Amendment). My friend claims that Spiro Agnew's father was a Greek Citizen when he was born. I've tried to find any information to confirm and deny this, but can't find anything. I know he's wrong (he's a Dem... haha) but need help with the proof.

I can't see Nixon choosing someone, and the Republicans electing, a vice president that was obviously unqualified for office.

So my question:

Is this true? Have one of the researcher's looked into Agnew's citizenship? Did Nixon choose a VP that was not a Natural Born Citizen? And if so, did he hide it like Chester A. Arthur did? I figure that one of the reasons I can't find any information on it might be because he did the "hide your past" thing like Arthur.

Any help would be great and help to take a liberal down!!

They way I understand the term, a person who is born on United States soil is a natural born cizen (as opposed to being born elsewhere and naturalized later.)

There was a SCOTUS ruling in the 1880’s that involved a Chinese American whose mother was Chinese but the father was naturalized American. Ruling indicated as long as one parent is an adult US citizen and child born in US the child is a natural born citizen. Some freepers point out that the US Constitution requires BOTH parents to be US citizens. This issue needs to be resolved by the SCOTUS because their precedent ruling conflicts with what the US Constitution states. Obama actually is an issue because in 1961 his 19 year old American mother may not even meet the definition of an adult American citizen in 1961, thus Obama must resume the citizenship of the only adult his father a British subject.

So we're going to debate the citizenship of dead people now? To prove what?

The birth certificate debate is the dumbest waste of energy ever in American politics.

As long as conservatives continue to push this nonsense, they won't be taken seriously as policy leaders.

Both parents must be United States Citizens, place of birth does not factor into the equation

Born: November 9, 1918
Baltimore, Maryland
Died: September 17, 1996
Ocean City, Maryland

Spiro Theodore Agnew was born November 9, 1918, in Baltimore, Maryland. He was the son of Theodore S. Agnew and his Virginia-born wife, Margaret Pollard Akers. Spiro Agnew was, in his own words, a “typical middle class youth” who spoke and wrote very well and gained experience writing speeches for his father’s many appearances before ethnic and community groups.

If someone robs a bank and gets away with it, does that mean bank robbing is no longer illegal??? Or does it mean that just because one a**hole got away with it doesn’t mean we are going to let the next one get away... Just trying to get impute on how this works???

According to this post by Red Steel, Spiro Agnew's father was naturalized before young Spiro was born:

Agnew’s father was a Greek immigrant and his mother a native of Virginia. There was some contention that (thread referenced in #3), based on the 1920 census, that his father had not yet become a naturalized citizen when Spiro was born. But I think it was concluded that census data was no proof of whether his father had been been naturalized or not by 1920.

No, Sandy. To be a Natural Born Citizen (as understood by the Framers), one must be born on the soil, to two citizen parents.

19 18 year old American mother

Don't know the issue with Agnew but suspect father was a citizen when he was born. Chester Authur is another matter, he hid his inelibibility. With Obozo there are a "lot of issues" not 1 issue. Where he was actually born (unproven), who the father actually is (unproven) and whether he is a citizen at all (unproven).

Hmm ~ one interpretation There are several others. There’s no legislation on the matter and that’s what we need.

Those that ignore the mistakes of the past are born to make the same mistakes. Does the Constitution say that the VP needs to be natural born?

The only example that is roughly similar to Pres. Osama is Chester Arthur.

You've got an interesting handle for someone who's trying to convince conservatives to abandon the upholding of the Constitution.
