CBS News is reporting that documents obtained by Congressional investigators looking into the Project Gunrunner scandal include a wiretap authorization from Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer dated in March 2010.

Also included in documents released by investigators is a January 8, 2010 “briefing paper” on Project Gunrunner from the Phoenix, AZ field division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The documents were released earlier today as the Senate Judiciary Committee convened for an oversight hearing on the Department of Justice.
One document indicates a Holder Asst. Attorney General, Lanny Breuer, authorized a wiretap in the controversial gun trafficking case headquartered in Phoenix. In that case, called "Fast and Furious," multiple sources say ATF allowed thousands of guns to hit the streets, destined for Mexican drug cartels.—CBS News
As reported by this column today, Attorney General Eric Holder professed considerable lack of knowledge about the Gunrunner operation, and its links to the slaying of Customs and Border Protection Agent Brian Terry last December. That prompted the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms to call for Holder’s resignation.

Was Gun Runner a plan to secretly plant hundreds of US guns at the scenes of Mexican crimes, in order to politically justify infringements on the firearms rights of US citizens?

Just to correct the record for those watching at home - The Pulitzer is for printed (or on-line) media only. Broadcast journalists actually do receive Emmy Awards at a separate Emmy banquet that's held just for journalists. I think that broadcast journalists also qualify for Peabody Awards - which are kind of like electronic media Pulitzers.
My predictions:
1. The gun dealers BATFE ordered to sell the weapons will be criminally prosecuted and sued civilly.
2. The bureaucrats who conceived and ran the operation will be promoted.
3. The entire affair will be memory-holed by the 2012 election.

Those with a firm understanding of the principles of real freedom understand how a free market could provide a solution. Equally obvious would be why this is death on ice if government were to attempt it, regardless of Party affiliation.
I was responding to THE BRONZE TITAN who called my rationale warped. He said my insinuation that holder was supporting the admin. in forcing more gun control was “warped”. It looks like we both disagree.

Well, in a word: YES
More to the point, the plan was for the Mexicans to submit firearms serial numbers of weapons they seized to the ATF for verification that they came from the US and thereby provide justification to further restrict access to firearms in the US.
The guns were not to be "planted" but rather to be used by the drug gangs and either picked up at the scenes of drug violence (wherein a dead/wounded drug gang member dropped the weapon) or in seized in raids of drug gang cache's.
Try as I might, I’m unable to dredge up any term in the English language to adequately express the depth of my loathing for him, his boss and their countless America-hating acolytes.
