Sir John A Would Know What Do With Harper's Majority (Stephen Harper's Good Fortune Alert)

He isn’t coming in cold, with an enormous backlog of unrealistic ambitions to ram through. Instead, the Tories have a solid idea of what they want to accomplish over the next four years. Having already elected him twice previously, Canadians won’t be looking for sudden miracles. Far from it: such is the level of exhaustion with politics that most Canadians will be delighted if the government just stays out of their face for the majority of the mandate.

Harper, in effect, has four years to shepherd through legislation that should come as little surprise to anyone, and he has the majority to do it without excessive drama. If he can tone down the ugly atmosphere on the Hill (which shouldn’t be difficult given the demise of the Liberals) and provide four years of quiet, competent government, ending with a balanced budget and healthy economy, he will be able to return to voters with a claim to having fulfilled expectations.

Progressive-Conservatives ruled Ontario for more than 40 years by being quietly competent. No surprises, no drama. One after another, unexciting Tory premiers were put in place to provide unexciting, reliable government. Mr. Harper has an opportunity to establish a similar sense of order on a federal level. If he pulls it off, he will be the first Tory since Macdonald to do so.

I think the Stephen Harper has the good fortune to pull it off. He already decimated the Liberals and the Bloc and steered Canada through a depression. Now he needs to give the country what it wants: competent, reliable and stable government. He could do what eluded Canada's first Prime Minister, John A. MacDonald in the 19th Century: a long period of federal Conservative hegemony.

The neo-marxist NDP will be easy to handle given that Layton has crippled himself with visiting whore-houses and getting caught stark naked along with proclaiming the perfection of govt. deathcare while he attended private medical clinics to repair a hernia.
To compound the “opposition” in the House is that the separatist vote moved from the Bloc to the NDP after Layton agreed with the racist Bill-101 and would implement it within federal buildings and signs in Quebec. The separatist vote represents HALF his elected mps (58). Good luck defending that in Parliament.

Harper was not a Thatcher or Reagan. He moved in small steps and will probably continue doing so. I expect he will deliver on ending tax payer subsidies for all political parties, ending the 2 billion dollar gun registry, and possibly privatizing the dreadful CBC.
