Yesterday was a sad day for Free Republic
May 3, 2011 | Huck

Posted on 05/03/2011 4:46:53 AM PDT by Huck

Yesterday should have been a glorious day around here. There should have been fireworks and celebration. There should have been somber remembrances. There should have been patriotic tributes. There should have been shared joy at the news that our guys had finally gotten Bin Laden.

Instead, when I visited the site, what I found was a lot of carping. I found people focused more on the political spin than on the great news. I found people transferring their birther mentality onto this event, talking about Obama faking this news, photoshopping information, etc. It wasn't everybody, but it was a LOT of people. It made me sick.

Yesterday Free Republic seemed like DU. It makes me wonder what the hell is going on. Are Freepers getting younger? I always assume that DU is so pathetically immature because they must be younger. Free Republic has always been a place dominated by great class, and wit, and decency. Not this time. What I saw yesterday was a pathetic embarrassment and totally unworthy of this great forum.

As some of you may know, I was in lower Manhattan on 9-11. I was just across the street from the WTC when the first plane hit. I still remember the beautiful clear blue sky that day. I remember walking in between the towers just a minute or so before 8:46am, on my normal route to work. I remember my co-workers screaming in panic when they watched from an office window as the second plane hit the south tower. I remember women crying and screaming hysterically. I remember not being able to contact my wife to tell her I was OK. I remember people jumping to their deaths. I remember seeing the north tower go down with my own eyes, hearing it with my own ears. I remember fleeing Manhattan. I remember it was a Tuesday.

I remember returning to work the following Monday, riding the ferry passed the site, noxious smoke still billowing from the wreckage. I remember armed troops on the sidewalks. I remember wearing a breathing mask inside my building because the foul odor was seeping in through the ventilation system. I remember thinking we'd really gotten kicked in the teeth. They had killed innocent people, they had traumatized our women and children, and I really wanted revenge. I hung a picture on my wall of the American eagle sharpening his talons.

It has been a long time since that day. It's hard to believe how fast time flies. Then again, if you lost your loved one, I imagine time hasn't gone so fast. I love my wife so much, I can empathize with anyone who has lost the one they love. I can't imagine how that would be, and don't want to know, but I can cry for those people because I know what it is like to find your one true love.

I'm not an Obama fan. I hate socialism. But I am so happy that Bin Laden is killed, and that we have exacted some real revenge. It's about time. The politics don't even play into it for me. I still have the little flag, now tattered, that I flew on my car antenna after 9-11. I want to take it out of storage and put it on my car. I want to see American flags on cars like we saw back then. But it's not going to happen, and partially because the normally patriotic conservatives such as the ones here on Free Republic are instead focused on the politics and the fact that a socialist Democrat was president and will get some of the credit.

I guess you all would have been pissed on D-Day too. FDR was as big a socialist as anyone. I guess VE day and VJ day would have chapped your hides, since Truman was a DEM. I don't mean to paint with a broad brush. I know it wasn't every Freeper acting this way. But when I went on the board, that was the general impression, and it was really disappointing. It should have been a great day here. Instead, I saw a lack of patriotism and a lack of class. Free Republic should be better than this. If conservatives lose their patriotism and class, then what will happen to those virtues? I hope we can get them back soon. In the meantime, thanks for reading.

Respectfully,

Huck

I dont know why it’s in front page news. I may have done that when I chose the topics? Not sure. I didn’t do it intentionally.

Why would you trust pictures from this administration any more than you trust his “long form birth certificate”?

I would like something to prove or disprove. Having nothing is having nothing. When they released the birth certificate I was able to download it immediately and prove it was a forgery. Then I knew for sure.

I believe that there is a strong amount of viewers here that do not want to be talked into supporting Palin, Bachmann or any other pureblood definitive conservative.

I believe that there are to a degree a certain amount of anti-birthers here that are in the frame of mind to use any excuse to debase a poster if they have any history of supporting birtherism. On that note the term itself is being written into stone it appears, and a lot of people for “some” obvious reason just plain do not like that.

On a closing note my summary of any recent faults of Fr is that people are becoming a bit too narrow visioned, expecting the perfect Mr. or Ms. Conservative. I can imagine a thread about Michelle Bachman that was heavily into her faults would be zotted pretty quick.

Anyhow, have a good day, I am off to my underpaid day job and may your day be productive.

“The discourse on FR has deteriorated from the early days.”

Of course, as has the general level of civility. Not to mention civilization. We are suffering the unavoidable consequences of allowing commies to take over our schools. Figure a decade or so for the decline on FR - and then examine the declining level of student education.

I suggest that the Internet will become the source of information, not the universities or school systems. Indeed, I foresee an intellectual blossoming in America due to unlimited access to data and the unique American belief in the individual.

Exactly. This administration is ridiculous. It was all on tape, right? How did they manage to screw up the story? How?

LIARS.

So the scepticism is not just here, it is everywhere. Nobody believes a word that Obama or this administration says without proof to back it up.

Good, then there is hope for this Republic. The more people who think that way, the better.

The number of cynics here on FR are a direct result of the current president and his obvious propensity TO LIE!

We now have to question EVERY word that comes out of his lips!

HE has turned us into the doubting Thomases that we are. And I agree, it has robbed us of the SHEER JOY that we should be feeling right now that OBL is dead.

There is no doubt that more is going on then meets the eye. Bin Laden lived in Pakistan compound right next to their West Point, undetected for years? Nobody knew Bin Laden was there? Or was it simply time to get rid of Bin Laden because he has served his purpose and was of no further use?

And how convent is it that there is no longer a body to examine? Cause of death? We will never know. Really Bin Laden? We will never know.

First we are told he fought, then we are told is didn't, used a wive as a human shield then he didn't. Why not capture instead of kill? There is zero doubt in my mind that the Navy Seals could have taken him alive.

And why the strict adherence to Islamic law in the case of the mass murderer Bin Laden?

Sorry my freeper friend but there are a lot of legit questions yet to be answered.

Much agreed, my FRiend. If this turns out to be a new “bug zapper thread,” then so be it.

This thread reminds me of the the Zionist FReeper crowd from 2000-2001. Anyone who found fault with the Israeli Government was automatically labeled an anti-Semite.

True.

(1) Don't give this administration the "benefit of any doubt" as to anything.

(2) Don't believe anything they say.

(3) In this case Don Runsfeld is accepting that Bin Laden was killed and buried at sea. Rumsfeld is trustworthy, and has good connections. I'll accept his acceptance, and that alone, in this matter.

(4) Why celebrate? Obama essentially was defanged at Tora Bora. After that he was wounded burden of a man to anyone harboring with him. The celebration was really in late 2001.

(5) Why celebrate? This event adds to the strength of America's second greatest enemy: the continuing evils of Obama and his corruptions. (The first enemy are cultural -- those who support the rampant cultural debasement of our times, viz the breakdown of marriage, the celebration of perversion.)

(6) FR has always had hot, awful, ugly contentious discussions on some issues. Yesterday on FR was not that different than FR in 1998 or 2003 or 2008.

Thing is, most immediate after-action reports are sketchy and incomplete, and oft times confusing.

For an operation of this nature, it will take days for the SEALS to put together a complete and accurate account of what happened.

This example is not an attempt to “lie,” as in deliberate misrepresentation of what is known to be true, this just proves that the media wants answers, now, and the spokesmen are pressed into giving what they think they know, now, and this feeds the frenzy.

If the officials held back for several days, to ensure they get the real flow of events and real facts, then there would be bleating from the media and others about “cover-up.”

Can't win.

From the moment I heard I thought that Obama pulled some strings to make it happen JUST because he was being attacked by Trump as he started up his 2012 campaign. I believe allowing it to happen was good but he only did it for himself and his political career.
